WKO5 is here and it looks... different

I agree. It’s usable but I wouldn’t say performance is good. I would still recommend it though.

that sucks. After upgrading I put WKO4 on my desktop Mac mini with dual 24" LCD (portrait), and WKO5 on my high-end 2016 MacBook Pro. After sitting on the upgrade sidelines for a long time, I asked TP support for another trial and re-evaluated WKO5. Big difference and since then WKO5 performance has been great but I haven’t tried it on a desktop.

Yeah, when I tried WKO5 after release I did all those things and even ran WKO5 exclusively for a couple weeks but it never got much better. It was excrutiating to have to wait 6–10 seconds for the system to respond to clicks. It probably had to do with my very large data set, I have 18 years of power data files.

Though it sounds like they may have addressed perf. issues since then so I’ll give it another try. Unfortunately, TrainingPeaks support isn’t very responsive so I’m still waiting for them to reactivate my WKO5 trial. :frowning:

No perf issues here on my MacBook Air… I don’t have as large of datasets but with 3+years of data it seems to work fine.

However, on my iMac (Base model) 2016 it wasn’t as pleasant but still acceptable. I suspect the HDD was the problem, if i had an SSD I think things would of been better.

MacBook Air 1.6Ghz i5 (Base model 2019)
iMac 5K 27" (Base model 2016/17)

Best to ask this in the FB group for WKO.

I know I know I really wish they had an awesome forum like TR  … One can only hope

Thanks for the feedback but it looks like WKO5 just won’t work for me.

I gave it another try but perf with 4,656 workout files is just unusable, even on an iMac w/4GHz Core i7, 32GB RAM and an SSD. There were also a couple functional regressions which I’m just not willing to live with. So I’m sticking with WKO4 and just manually importing my workouts (since TP sync is broken due to the expired security certificate).

During the trial I was actually talking with their support and it was an excruciatingly bad and unhelpful. Between that and the fact that the WKO5 “side by side” install corrupted all my “indoor” workouts (since WKO4 doesn’t have that category) forcing me to restore from a Time Machine backup, I’ve sworn off giving TP any more of my money. This whole fiasco is actually kind of disappointing as I’ve been a customer since WKO v1. :disappointed:

oh wow, with that kind of spec’ed laptop I wouldn’t think any workload would be able to slow it down…

Might be worth contacting support or @TimWKO directly maybe ? Seems silly WKO4 can take the workload but not 5…

I do still track this thread but like to be respectful of TrainerRoad team and not turn it into a WKO5 promo. You can always going our WKO Power user Facebook group or if you have a question, you can email me at info@wko5.com.

@TimWKO,

Any progress on having an alternative to the Facebook group to support customers who aren’t on Facebook?

Hey Tim,

I didn’t try the Facebook group since I was already working with TP support (plus I’m trying to wean myself off Facebook), but I did try pinging you on Twitter.

Not sure we still need to chat as I’ve already decided to stick with WKO4. WKO5 doesn’t provide any benefit to the way I use WKO, and in some ways it’s actually a regression (for me). So I’m sticking with WKO4 and just manually importing workouts since TP/WKO sync is broken.

I sent most of my feedback to the TP support ticket (#357698), which the rep did say they’d forward to the product team, so hopefully you’ll get it.

Ive been using TR for basic health reasons (to loose weight ,maintain fitness) and to generally be faster on the bike when I go out to ride. There are no races and never will be.
But I must admit, I love tracking stuff and generally like to know whats going on , so my question is
Would it be worth getting wko for someone in this situation?
Basically just to track progress
I recently read a post on here where a rider would like to track two specific workouts and in TR you kinda have to beat around the bush to do it where im guessing wko would make this a easier job of doing.

Thanks for any help!
Herb

I love WKO5, but it’s an analytics engine and you ca do some serious analysis. Perhaps interval.icu would be better for your needs (it’s free)…?

What, specifically, are you interested in tracking?

Besides just the general stuff like cadence, power during workouts and to choose a workout from the past to a new one id love to track my weight. And see how it hopefully decreases with my riding overtime.
I dont know if this is possible but I have diabetes and if you could somehow see how blood levels are before and after rides (even if i have to manually put those number in) but to chart that would be cool if thats even a possibility and knowing the cut off with my levels before Im in a danger zone of bonking.

You could probably get WKO5 to do that but… wouldn’t it make more sense to use something like the MyFitnessPal diabetes app (or similar) to track your blood metrics + pair with a smart scale to automatically bring in your weight + record your food and track calories in and calories out if trying for weight loss?

WKO5 is really a purpose built high end analytics platform for bicycle training. It’s not inexpensive and has a not trivial learning curve.

Just thinking out loud. Your use case is a good one for sure.

Well i wanna track all that i do on the bike as well but if possible was thinking of other things to track that go along with the bike (health) stuff
And doing it all in one place would of course be nice
So thats why I was thinking of wko since it is a powerful tool

With WKO5, Peaksware have implemented a whole language and integrated visual interface to enable the mining and presentation of your cycling data. With that, it’s easy to go down the path of analysis paralysis (been there, done that) but unless you’re being paid to ride your bike (or aspire to be) 90% of the features will be overkill.

It’s very easy to set it up with a more “basic” view and with that it’s nice to have control of your own data and if you “amortise” the expense over, say 5 years of use, it’s far cheaper than any subscription-based tool so from that perspective it’s really a no-brainer.

I just wish it had a workout creator and training interface similar to TR (or the module in GoldenCheetah) that is integrated with iLevels. Without it, using iLevels is a pain in the a** because they change so frequently.

I am the same as you Bikr. I personally think that Training Peaks ceasing the functionality of perfectly working software, then forcing you to spend another chunk of cash to continue using as it was sold to you with seamless syncing. Given this poor display of ethics they also expect you to trust them that WKO5 will not suffer the same fate in a few years.

You might get sync to work by temporarily setting the date of your system prior to 5/30/2020.

I downloaded the trial version of WKO5 and so far have really enjoyed deep diving in all the models and associated graphs + insights.

However, I’m wondering if anyone else knows whether the PD Curve highly weights the sprint end of the curve. In the Normalized Residuals graph (giving a sense for how well the PD Curve has fit your actual mean max power curve) it seems like the residuals are distributed across the time axis in log space.

I don’t know if that’s a convenience for graphing, or if the curve fit / minimization of residuals is actually taking place with time in log space. It appears that my poor 0-12 second sprint is pulling down on the curve by roughly the same amount as my over performance on 3-12 minutes is pulling it up.

Does anyone know what’s happening here?

You might need to perform some tests in those areas. Can you post a pic of your normalised residuals graph?
