Starting from scratch for a 70.3

1yr ago, ruptured meniscus, just over 8wks ago 3 broken ribs and a pneumothorax. At 59 you just dont bounce back so well, but its time to embrace fatigue again.
Im aiming for a 70.3 in 36wks, it’ll be a challenge.
So do i start a plan now or wait till about 24wks out, id like the structure, and how do i decide on low or mid volume? Current ftp is 3.2w/kg, swimming and running are at a very low fitness level.

Can’t speak for TR’s plans specifically, but you should start getting some very low volume in. It’s going to take a few weeks just to establish your training routine, to adapt your body to training and impact again, etc. If you choose to run a TR plan, I would definitely start with low volume, to the point you can run a low volume base plan for 10-12 weeks or so, and then re-start a mid-volume plan if that is going well.

Overarching point is you have to train who you are right now, not who you used to be. That’s likely going to be frustrating, but the other option leads to injury and/or burnout. So take it slow, and yeah, start early.

Hey @Ged17  I am so sorry to hear about all your body is going through!

I agree with @kurt.braeckel, but first things first, I would probably get the OK from the doc to train.

If you feel a Low Volume may be a little too much to start with, you can always use TrainNow or just start by doing easy spins to get used to the bike again. You have the advantage of having time on your side :).

Once you’re ready for a plan, it is best to use the Low Volume and add as needed. You can create a tri plan using TR’s custom training plans.

So i can just do a base plan for 12wks, i assumed a plan would automatically give me all 3 stages.
@kurt.braeckel is spot on with the comment “who you are now”. I am worried I’ll push too hard initially as its very frustrating knowing where my fitness was.
I am also concerned with training burnout, so may just wing it for next 3 months, then start focussing with a plan

@Ged17, what @kurt.braeckel is suggesting is manually entering a 12-week phase, which you can do with TR.

Or the other option I mentioned would be to have TR create you a custom plan with the Base>>Build>>Phases. This may even give you more flexibility in terms of the number of training days and durations per workout you’d like to start with.

If you want a plan to start with, you can look at both options and see which one fits you best.

@Caro.Gomez-Villafane Ive done mid vol road race plan a few times, from a volume and time perspective will a mid vol 70.3 plan be similar

@Ged17 you will have more volume on a tri plan as you’re adding swim and run activities, so I would start with a Low Volume and move to a Mid Volume if needed.
