Sweet Spot Training
Sweet spot training is the riding intensity that gives you the biggest fitness return for the time you put in — hard enough to drive real adaptation, but not so hard that it wrecks the rest of your week. It is the backbone of how TrainerRoad makes time-crunched cyclists faster.

What Is Sweet Spot Training?
Sweet spot sits between tempo and threshold — the upper end of tempo running into the low end of your threshold, between 88–94% of your FTP. It earns its name by hitting the “sweet spot” between two competing goals: a workout hard enough to push your aerobic fitness and sustainable power upward, yet controlled enough that you can absorb it and come back to train again soon. That balance is why so much productive training lives here.
Intensity zones as a percentage of your FTP
The sweet spot lives at 88–94% of FTP — hard enough to matter, easy enough to repeat.
Why Sweet Spot Training Works
Threshold and VO2 max intervals deliver a big stimulus but cost a lot of fatigue, so you can only do so many before you need to recover. Easy endurance riding is repeatable but takes a lot of hours to pay off. Sweet spot sits in between: it drives many of the same adaptations as threshold work — a higher FTP, better muscular endurance, a stronger aerobic engine — at a fatigue cost you can repeat several times a week. For anyone training on limited time, that efficiency is the whole point.
Stimulus
Big Fitness Gains
Sweet spot drives many of the same adaptations as threshold work — a higher FTP, better muscular endurance, and a stronger aerobic engine.
Fatigue
A Cost You Can Afford
It asks far less of you than threshold or VO2 max efforts, so a session does not wreck the rest of your training week.
Repeatability
Again and Again
Because the fatigue stays manageable, you can come back to sweet spot several times a week — and that repeatability is where fitness compounds.
How Much Sweet Spot Should You Do?
More is not automatically better. Sweet spot is potent precisely because it is repeatable, but pile on too much and it stops being sustainable. The art is matching the dose to your schedule, your recovery, and the time of year — heavier in a base block, lighter when you are sharpening for an event. Getting that balance right by hand is hard, which is exactly where structure helps.
