What Is FTP?

Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is the highest average power you can sustain for roughly an hour, measured in watts. It is the most useful number in cycling training: it sets the intensity of your workouts and tracks your fitness over time. As your FTP rises, you are getting faster.

Sets Your Training Zones

Every workout intensity and interval target is set as a percentage of your FTP.

Tracks Your Progress

A rising FTP is the clearest sign your training is working.

Benchmarks Your Fitness

Compare efforts across seasons, routes, and other cyclists with a single number.

You Do Not Need an FTP Test to Know Your FTP

Traditional FTP testing means a hard, all-out effort every few weeks just to find a number. TrainerRoad replaces it with AI FTP Detection, which analyzes your rides and detects your FTP automatically — accurately, and without a single dreaded test. Your training stays matched to your fitness as it changes, and a structured training plan keeps raising it.

TrainerRoad is cycling’s most effective training system: structured workouts, science-based plans, and AI that personalizes everything to you — including your FTP.

The Old Way: Calculating FTP From a Test

Prefer to estimate FTP yourself? Because an all-out hour is hard to pace, cyclists estimate FTP from a shorter test and apply a proven multiplier — the same math the calculator above uses.

20-Minute Test

Warm up, then ride as hard as you can sustain for 20 minutes. Your FTP is 95% of your average power for that effort.

8-Minute Test

After a warm-up, complete two 8-minute all-out efforts and take the average power of your best one. Your FTP is 90% of that power.

Ramp Test

Ride a steadily increasing power target until you can no longer continue. Your FTP is 75% of the best one-minute power you reached. The ramp test is the quickest way to test, and it is how the TrainerRoad Ramp Test works.
