Tactics for Bigger Riders, Extra Recovery, Racing a New Category and More – Ask a Cycling Coach 235

I’m in Canberra so can’t say for sure but I’d expect the Heffron crits will just be graded A through to F or something, no Masters until Open road races or State Titles etc.

A grade here in CBR is legit and I have no doubt that it’s the same up there. Plus people will be ramping up for Nationals and the summer national crit race series…

Ask Pete Morris to check with his teammate Joe Lewis, he’ll know.

Tricky course too I think, so a skilled rider @ 265 could be very efficient. Are you going to record the race??? I want to watch Pete critique it :grinning:

Yup!! This rider was not efficient compared to A grade.

@Nate_Pearson I’m fairly new to Crits having raced for about a year and a half. I’m in B grade and find myself in the front pack towards the end but have nothing left for the sprint. I’m probably not very efficient

89kg, 345 FTP, last week averaged 312 watts at 44km/h. Was 6th wheel final corner came 10th

@Nate_Pearson, @Pete thanks for the shout out for the Boise Twilight Crit. I’ve been going to this event as a spectator for over 20 years. As soon as I saw Pete on the podcast, I said, “that guy has raced in Boise!” I hope you guys come this year as I’d like to thank you all for a great podcast and product in person.

Hey @Nate_Pearson - you should definitely come to Melbourne. The home of Australian cycling with crits on 5 days per week.

@Nate_Pearson what’s bringing you to Australia? Wish you guys were all coming over and doing some more trainer road events all round - Brisbane is a great place for riding!

Hi Nate, I race regularly in Sydney. If you email Cycling Australia they’ll hook you up with a temporary license. You’d be close to A-grade at Tuesday night Heffron but B-grade is still a smashfest (and when A catches, given it’s a handicap) you’ll get the full A experience.

What are the dates for your visit?

@Nate_Pearson I’d stick to B-grade at Heffron on Tuesday if I was you.
It’s a very technical and rough course. IMO, racing it in A-grade without previous experience won’t be fun.

If you’re staying a bit longer, give me a shout and I’ll help you with getting to Sutherland on Friday. The course is easier and you should be able to race it in A-grade.

What’s at Sutherland? Which Friday?

Hobbits and goblins. (Sorry. I couldn’t help myself).

The Sutherland Shire is just south of Sydney and is actually quite beautiful. Well worth a look if you’re in town, if just for the scenery.
They have a purpose built park for bikes down there.

A dedicated race track with a very smooth surface (unlike Heffron).
This Friday, the 13th starting from 5.30pm

@Nate_Pearson: u use a waxed chain for indoor trainer rides. How many hours do u use them before re-waxing?

All this talk of benefits of a bigger cyclist is giving me a laundry list of excuses for why I should keep my eating and drinking habits going

Good episode guys, thanks for the mention!

I’m not sure how many hours, I use it until it gets really loud. I switch it out with a fresh one before events.

Are you just going to sit in this year and sprint against other Mike’s Bikes riders? Can you guys not show up to Cal Aggie please?

More attacking this year - I have Matt to rely on if it comes back together for a field sprint! Let’s both get in a break at Cal Aggie, I’ll give you a really fast leadout at 200m to go

It is ok but then they are now the ones taking the beating so they complain just like we complain (in vain) when they attack on the hills. :+1:

I looked at the Sutherland course and if it’s the one I saw it’s like steep downhill then steep climb over and over.

Heffron is pretty flat, cross winds and fast corners.

For NorCal races, Sutherland would be my weakness and Heffron would be my strength.
