Hello my favourite peeps! I wasn’t able to find a thread newer than 2023, so my apologies for the duplicate question. But, I was curious if TR is now able to factor in injuries to a training plan. I recently broke my pelvis and leg, so I am going to postpone the rest of my current training plan, but I wanted to know the best way to do this so that when I return to cycling, TR will know that I am coming back without much strength or fitness.
You can add “injury” to your calendar just like time off or illness.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for pointing out where to activate it
Just one additional comment: depending on how many weeks you are out of order, it may make more sense to start afresh. I’m not an MD, but a broken pelvis sounds like something that could take a while to mend.
I was thinking similar, but I guess it would depend on a few things: How far through the current plan, how long are you expecting to be off the bike, how close to finishing the plan/getting to the A-race?
I recently ended up with a lacerated kidney which has meant 6 weeks completely off the bike and at least another 6 weeks until I can ride vigorously/outside. I’m having to start off really gently and work up/see how I go. So any training plan would be completely out of the window and will start a new one when I feel fully fit.
Hey @Jimi_Sendrix, ouch , hope you heal fast!
As @mtbjones mentioned, you can add a training adjustment for Injury to your Calendar.
However, first things first, I’d recommend getting the OK from your doctor before resuming your training. Once you start training again, start by feel and progress into it as we all heal differently, so it’s best to listen to your body.
I tore my ACL last year. Ended up with about 8 weeks off the bike. I’d recommend mostly ignoring trainerroad’s AI FTP and AI workout recommendations until you feel you’re back to a reasonable level of fitness.
I started getting back on the bike 6 weeks after surgery. I was just using my Wahoo to control the trainer since I was doing like 15 minute workouts at 80-90watts. After about 4 weeks of building up to doing about 1hr/150 watts I did an AI FTP detection and tried to start using the TR recommended workouts, but they were definitely too hard. I ended up manually turning my FTP down 8% and found that to work better. Another 4 weeks later I did another AI FTP detection and at that point the AI FTP detection agreed with what I had manually turned FTP down to. That’s when things started stabilizing and the AI recommended workouts started making sense.
Will the TR adaptations be any different if the time off is due to vaca, illness, or injury, or will the adaptations be the same for the same time off irrespective of the reason?
@Saddlesaur, when your time off ends, whether due to illness, injury, or vacation, you’re signaling to TrainerRoad that you’re ready to train again. TrainerRoad will choose the best workout for you based on how long you’ve been away, and will analyze your performance to adapt your training if needed.
If you’re still recovering from illness or injury, it’s best to keep your time off active until you’re fully ready to return and get the OK from the doc.
OK. So TR doesn’t do anything different wrt the reason for time off. It’s only the duration that matters, right?
I don’t know, but even if it did distinguish, it makes a huge difference whether you have been off the bike, because you have had a cold or you have a broken pelvis. I wouldn’t expect TR or even a human coach to guess what FTP you’ll have. A good human coach would likely ease you into training, especially if there might be discomfort due to simply sitting on a bike for an extended period of time. (I have never had a broken pelvis, so I don’t know whether it actually hurts getting back on the bike.)
@Saddlesaur, sorry for the late reply on this one!
Time Off is treated similarly regardless of the category type. However, as I mentioned, when it comes to injury, it’s better to get the OK from the doctor prior to returning to training. Everyone heals differently and at varying rates, so this is something that the athlete must also gauge by feel, as they are the only ones who know how their body is feeling. As @OreoCookie mentioned this as well, even if you were working with a human coach, the athlete would have to assess this. Unfortunately there is no mind reading here
Hey, thanks. It’s important to know that TR adaptations only take into account the amount of time off and not the reason. It appropriately sets user expectations and informs them that they should make adjustments to their plan/workouts based on the reason rather than expecting TR to do it.
