DIY "Martin 061" bars

I had ChatGPT make me a clone of a very popular and delicious exercise bar:

Servings: 6
Yield: ~6 bars (≈55g each)
Nutrition (per bar): 200 kcal | 40g carbs | 3g fat | 2g protein

:salt: Ingredients

:small_blue_diamond: Dry Ingredients:

  • 100g rolled oats (gluten-free)
  • 60g rice flour
  • 15g rice bran, oat bran, or finely ground oats
  • 25g maltodextrin powder
  • 25g granulated sugar
  • 2g salt
  • 15g puffed rice (e.g., Rice Krispies)

:small_orange_diamond: Wet Ingredients:

  • 40g light corn syrup (can sub 40g honey to make 60g honey total, probably could sub a thick simple syrup)
  • 20g honey
  • 60g glucose syrup
  • 30g sunflower oil (or substitute: canola, light olive, avocado)
  • 1g guar gum (≈¼ tsp)
  • 2g rice extract or vanilla (optional)

:man_cook: Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine oats, rice flour, rice bran, maltodextrin, sugar, and salt.
Set puffed rice aside for later.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients
Whisk guar gum into light corn syrup until dissolved.
Stir in honey, glucose syrup, sunflower oil, and extract.
Warm gently on low heat if needed for easier mixing.
  3. Combine
Add wet mixture to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
    Gently fold in puffed rice.
  4. Shape & Chill
Line an 8x8" dish with parchment paper.
Press mixture evenly to about 1" thick.
Refrigerate for 2+ hours until set.
  5. Cut & Store
Slice into 6 bars (~55g each).
Wrap individually. Store in fridge (1 week) or freezer (1 month).

:white_check_mark: Pro Tips

  • Toast oats for extra chew.
  • Use toasted puffed rice for more crunch.
  • Add a dash of cinnamon or citrus zest for flavor.
  • Fold puffed rice in last to keep it crisp.
  • Press mixture gently to avoid crushing puffed rice.

What bar is this attempting to replicate?

Maurten (not Martin) does not make a 061 bar.

They make a c160 in two different varieties.

I assume this is the non chocolate one but even then many of the ingredients are incorrect (the Maurten does not contain honey).

Have you tested this?

Maurten (not Martin) does not make a 061 bar.

Have you tested this?

Yes, I made it and it is delicious.

Then who is it a copy of?

you are missing the joke

It’s a clone with ingredients that are not present in the original.

If I give you my address, can you mail me rice bran, lecithin, and “glucose-fructose syrup?”

Must be a red day.

No red days here ;). Nothing was aimed at you personally, just that ChatGPT didn’t make a clone of an energy bar so I wouldn’t say it is one. I am sure it’s a good tasting perfectly fine energy bar but it’s not the same as what Maurten is selling.

I had thought about making a clone Maurten bar before, and after looking at the ingredients it really didn’t seem to difficult to do. However, the desire faded when I started using breakfast bars for fuel as they have about 25 grams carbs each, and they are so cheap. I once lost all of my food on a ride and stopped into a CVS and bought a box of 8 for like 3 bucks. For those that do want to make it, here are the ingredients:

I asked copilot what glucose fructose syrup was as I just imaging it would like simple syrup, but maybe it’s a nice way of saying HFCS.

Glucose-Fructose syrup is a liquid sweetener used in the manufacturing of foods and beverages. It is composed of different sugars, mainly glucose and fructose, with varying compositions, with a fructose content ranging from 5 to 50%. If the fructose content exceeds 50%, the product becomes a Fructose-Glucose syrup. It is made from starch extracted from grains and vegetables. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is also known as glucose–fructose syrup and is a sweetener made from corn starch.
Glucose syrup is used in baking and can be bought on Amazon. Overall the ingredients don’t seem too exotic.

Yeah, I had some glucose syrup on hand. I think you could easily modify this recipe with honey as the only liquid sugar in the mix.

I had some of these on my ride today and they were delicious.
