WKO5 is here and it looks... different

Seems a good summary. Despite all that I was going to upgrade until I realised that the discounted price was then plus USA tax.
Decided not to bother as I was not exactly blown away with the new version and WKO4 met my needs.

I’m nearly at the end of a 2-week trial, and I won’t be buying, at least not for now.

But not because of issues with wko5, but with the whole wko system in general. The more I explore, the more I look through discussions in the Facebook group, the more it seems like a straitjacket rather than a training tool. And anyone who questions the methodology or the results is told they’re not doing it right.

In some cases, to use a popular current term, it becomes almost like gaslighting: I still chuckle at the guy who literally rode at 240 watts for an hour and was then persuaded to accept his mFTP of 214.

I also dislike its reliance on straight power testing. It’s summer, I don’t want to do a 43 minute test to fill in a gap in my PDC. But this supposedly amazing system is telling me that even though I’ve ridden a 2 hour road race at 276 NP, my mFTP is 255. And the problem is that just about all the insights it offers are dependent on having an accurate PDC.

Everything feels arbitrary and inflexible. On the group I raised the question of their supposedly intelligent recommended “extensive anaerobic” intervals. The prescription was a 1 min on / 2 min off workout at such a ridiculous power that I’d have been lucky to complete two of them. It would have redefined the term “NP Buster”. And yet I was just fobbed off with the ridiculous suggestion that I try it until I can increase the number of intervals.

What I like about TR is that it responds to data and to real world results. When the ramp test was in beta, they checked workout compliance and changed the formula until they got it right. WKO might work really well for TT training maybe, but it’s not for me.

Out of curiosity, did you actually end up trying the workout? I wanted to see what the results were

Not in 37 degree (celcius) heat, no…

Oof, yeah true.

Yes, it does feel a bit rushed. They haven’t worked out all the bugs. A recent update appears to have deleted some user-created dashboards. Also started pulling in running power in calculating cycling FTP. I admit, it was nice for a moment to think that the program thought my FTP was 341

I have a robust machine so WKO4 wasn’t exactly slow. WKO5 feels a bit faster, but not enough to upgrade for. Haven’t seen any new functions or features yet that would benefit from upgrading, although I surmise webinars etc in the near future will start covering that. Think the trial period should have been longer - 30 days is now considered pretty standard for most apps in this space, and 14 days with a buggy initial version is just bad form.

With WKO4 now kicked to the curb, buying now and getting used to it right away is probably better for the long run tho.

bbarrera - Late in the year, TP Premium is available for $89 a year. The only reason I’ve been a TP Premium customer is because of the calendar functionality, which is brilliant. You can cut/drag/drop workouts. Cut/Paste entire week(s) of workouts. It’s incredibly flexible. If you want to push the plan back etc. because you got sick or work interfered, select the date(s) affected while holding the shift key - not the workouts, the dates - and then click ‘shift’.

I very much hope TrainerRoad’s calendar makes TP Premium obsolete, but it’s not quite there yet, and I’ve found TP Premium to be really easy to use.

thanks, I see it now but can’t use those features with my basic/free account.

Downloaded the trial, and agree with most, definitely a bit of a learning curve to the software.

Being a data guy I really like all of the information but will take a bit of time to figure out a workflow.

One question, does the estimated vo2 include both bike and run power? It currently lists my vo2 as 91 which I’d argue is slightly inflated.

Similarly, is the suggested type of rider impacted by running power data?

Thanks for calling this out, I lose interest in any product that uses FB as a medium to engage customers.

I’m no runner to have such data. I did read something about doing some max efforts on WKO’s website to get decent model data, which I kinda done through racing lately. 5 sec, 1 min, 5 min, and 30 min. Tried those?

“Slightly”

yep, just slightly lol.

I’ve raced a handful of crits this summer but mostly following TR’s Base/Build plans as of late.
