Why has my FTP so much and is this right/should I just continue?

I realise that there have been a lot of conversations about FTP going down with the new AI features. Mine is a bit different, as it has increased (382 to 395). I am currently on a rest week, and it seems to have also scheduled some fairly heavy endurance rides with that FTP change. I would welcome some sense of whether this might be a glitch or if I should just trust it. I have attached a shot of the FTP increase and the rides it has given as a lead-up to a B race next weekend. Any advice welcome! Context: a 47-year-old male who is fairly dedicated and generally does what I am told by TrainerRoad.

Hard to say for sure without seeing what Threshold/SS/VO2 work you’ve been doing in the leadup to this, but I don’t see anything alarming here. Given you rated Bays as easy on the 20th, I wouldn’t have much concern about James even with the FTP bump.

I can’t say for sure about the Sunday ride (I can’t remember the last time I did anything longer than 120 minutes!) but if you struggle with James more than expected, it should tone the ride on the 26th down in response. Given you’ve been handed Surprise on the 8th I expect you’ve been doing similar workouts previously?

Ignore the zones and compare some of the intervals you’ve been doing/planned before and after the FTP bump e.g. Rogers +1 on the 27th - what was the last set of intervals you did at around 395W - how does that compare?

Only thing I note from the screenshot is that Manly on the 28th is pinned - might be deliberate, might be by accident so unpin if you want the AI to update

Thank you for the awesome reply. I have unpinned Manly (I must have done it by accident - getting used to the new features). Yes, I should be able to do the intervals (as long as they don’t progress too much and too quickly - I was doing higher progression numbers). I am probably only worried about heart rate drift in the Endurance rides - we’ll see where it ends up - I try to stay in Zone 2, low Zone 3. The threshold workouts look okay, assuming they don’t progress me too quickly. :crossed_fingers: Thanks again!

If you have that level of self awareness on your training (sounds like you do) then you can always decrease the intensity mid workout or cut short if you’re worried about the impact. From what we’ve been told the AI should recognise the effort and then use it to help guide future workouts if it works as advertised

Thanks again, so grateful!

Unfortunately, I am 92.5kg, so I need those watts up a hill, especially as I do XC MTB. I started cycling seriously 3 1/2 years ago, starting in the high 200s, aiming to reach 400 by the time I am 50. Nearly there.

It looks like your workouts have been going well. How do things feel?

You crushed that tough workout yesterday!! :flexed_biceps:

Thanks, Eddie, going to keep going… feels like it’s a bit of going into the unknown and seeing what my body can handle. It will be interesting to see how the AI calibrates, especially as I have tended to keep the longer endurance zones well inside Zone 2 for my heart rate, and the ones now programmed seem to stretch that a bit. Is an FTP of 400 (even and AI one) really achievable for a 47-year-old?

At 36, and about your weight - I hope so, it would give me hope! :joy:
