What's your untrained FTP?

I got 236w @ 88kg from my first ramp test after +1 year break.

Untrained about 280 at 105 kg with strength sports background, trained 380-390 W at 86-88 kg with a lot leaner body. A year between these results so I’m waiting eagerly to see what the next year will bring. I think I can still go down under 80 kg staying healthy and get my FTP (or at least TTE at FTP) up a bit.

Mine was 262 when I started cycling, but I came over as a national level fencer training 20hr plus weeks.
87kg.

Bought a bike on may 19th 2020.
First ramp test on june 3rd 2020 : 201
FTP after SSBHV 1 :252.

Before purchasing my bike, I had not been on a bike in 15 years.

My first FTP test was 180 watts @ 50 years old. Prior to this I was just riding 1500-2000 miles per year with no structured training. Two years after upping volume to 5000-6000 miles per year and doing group rides and some structured training I got up to around 250 watts @ 53 years old. I was just going to start doing serious structured training and then corona virus hit.

I am right there with you. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one struggling to get to the low 200s

I started cycling seriously in May 2019. Started training with TR in February this year. This is my FTP progression:

  • Before Trainerroad: 164
  • After SSB1 MV, General Build MV: 174
  • After SSB1 LV: 184
  • After SSB2 MV: 187

I’m 49 years old. Have never done any endurance sport and structured training before.

I’m pretty happy with my results. I can definitely tell that I am stronger and can suffer longer when riding outside. This week, I reached 19 mph average speed for the first time, being able to hold 170 Watt for 60 minutes. I’m so excited about this. Looking forward to train more this winter. Hopefully I can reach 20 mph next summer.

Last weekend I convinced two friends to put their bikes on my trainer and take a ramp test. (Yes I know I’m evil :smiling_imp:)

They are untrained and have never been trained at all. Both are 35 year old males around 195lbs and 175lbs. EDIT: 175lb guy ran a 5hr marathon around 6 years ago.

The 195lb guy got 100W
The 175lb guy got 169W

Hi, I’ve just started cycling and bought a tacx neo, my ramp test gave me an FTP of 180, I’m 50 years old.

I only have zwift and I’m thinking of getting trainer Road.

How does the trainer road plans compare to zwift, can they be imported into zwift?

I want to get my ftp up so I can ride with friends who are bike mad and on the road probably 5 days a week.

Thank you very much.

You can import workouts to zwift (I do it from TrainingPeaks), but not sure about exporting from TR

You can run both though at same time tho - sometimes I’ll run TR on my phone, controlling the trainer. And then run zwift on tv and set neo as power source (not controllable).

No idea what my pre cycling FTP was, but after about 10 years of cycling @ an average of 10,000 p/a for the 5 years before training my first FTP was 248w at 68kg (3.6w/kg). Roll on 5 years of training and my current FTP is around 260w (based on a 20min test of 284w) at 58.5kg (4.4w/kg). I’ve hit the golden 5w/kg a few times but I eased back to maintain during the first lock down.

Untrained, as in the first FTP test I ever did: 240
Now, with a few years of (not all that structured) training: 332

Around 220W on my first full FTP test at 83kg… maybe 4 to 6 weeks of riding at the time.
Quite happy with the progress since then :relaxed:

Hmmm…140W increase (as I remember) seems quite ok’ish progress

When I started TR in 2018 I tested at 275 on an 8 min test (was probably more like 260-265 since the virtual power was a bit high when i got a PM) @ 195lb. But I had a history of competitive swimming in HS before going all in on Olympic lifting in college for ~5 years before getting back on the bike. I had just been riding around for 5 months before that test.

I usually sit around 320ish now @ 185lb. Hoping for 350+ this year! Could probably drop a bit of weight but lifting is fun and I live in Michigan so it’s probably not really a negative.

Just did the ramp test and came out at 3.20 w/kg. I’m pretty light at 66 kg.

I’m 62 and ride a fair bit. 90,000 kms in the last 5 years. Ride on Zwift and the road. Push pretty hard. Do plenty of big rides, 100 X 100km plus rides in 2020… All my road rides are 3 plus w/kg and I ride at tempo/recovery pace on Zwift.

Am I correct in assuming I can push my FTP up by structuring my training around a TR plan?
I’m guessing the answer is an emphatic yes, given the consensus around interval training.

Would anyone care to have a stab at some sort of guesstimate based on the above info as to gains I could expect?

Untrained FTP was 317 W from a 20 min test at 95 kg with a strength training background. Last summer in the racing season i was at 390 W at 85 kg with 1,5 years of structured cycling training. Now my weight has crept up a bit to 90 kg, but I think I am back at the racing weight next summer again.

First ever “FTP test” was 23:00 @ 300 watts on a local TT course @ 85kg. For context, I had done ~1,000 hours of cycling in the 2.5 years I’d been riding up until then.

First time I started Road bike on 2016 at the age of 27 and my weight is only 54kg ATM. you can guess, it’s not pretty number…

49 years old, slowly but surely making the transition from an overweight couch potato at the start of 2021 to a new lifestyle.
First ever ramp test, utterly untrained, 3 months ago : 125 FTP (1,67 w/kg)
Almost 3 months later : 194 FTP (2,77 w/kg)
Hoping to make it to 3 w/kg someday.
