I’ve been riding and racing almost 4 years and I’m at 140… But I win xc mtb races??? ![]()
According to the Coggan chart, the top end of an untrained 70 kg person is about 175 watts. That seems about right, assuming that person has a typical cyclist body composition.
I started riding around 5 miles twice a week towards the end of 2018. A buddy and I started riding about 20-30 miles every other weekend in February of 2019. In June of 2019 I performed my first ramp test where I got an FTP of 165.
My current FTP is 206. 27 years old at 152lb and 5’10"
Off the couch with no training for 10+ years mine was 153… have gained 30W in the last 4 months of using TR! Super stoked!!
Off the couch (never touched a race bike, no sports for 10+years) I was at 120W, 90 kg according to Zwift (January 2018).
December 2019 I am up to 293W, 82 kg.
I got a bike in 2015 and a gps watch that December. 2016 I rode about 1200 miles. October 2017 I got a power meter and my first 20min FTP test (outside) was 185. Probably around 160lb, on a tri bike in aero.
I don’t know how the hell some people roll off the couch and are pushing 250+ watts on day 1
Why set yourself up for disappointment? Just do the training and stick to the plan. the results are what they are no matter what the “goal” is.
no “training” this year for 6 ish months only outside casual XC MTB riding then 2 months otc and my new FTP is 177 it peaked at 270 a few years ago. Usually hangs around 230 ish.
On the flip side, you also have a trained FTP ceiling:
Dude, thats incredible, well done!!!
There’s a chart floating around that says untrained is about 2.5w/kg and a good Cat 3 is about 4w/kg. Now. It doesn’t mean you’re a lock for a win Cat 5 at 4w/kg as there are many other factors that play.
I’m getting serious FTP fatigue.
It seems it’s what every road cyclist is talking about these days. I get how relevant it is for training and to a degree, race results.
However, as the post above mentions. Without the riders weight, it’s almost meaningless. My FTP is 600W, wow…but I weigh 200kgs! Not so wow…
Unless you only ride on pancakes.
Time for new metrics discussions.
I’m happy to start, my current interest is fatmax wattage, what else are folks interested in?
Untrained: 225w (3.2w/kg)
“Trained” but without using TR: 265w (3.8w/kg)
Trained, since starting utilizing TR in Jan 2018: 295w (4.2w/kg); 300w (4.28w/kg), 306w (4.43w/kg), 308w (4.46w/kg), & currently doing TR workouts at 311-323w FTP setting (upping add’l % intensity depending on type … @ 4.56 - 4.7w/kg)
(edit: w/kg metrics added throughout based on weight at various snap-shot times… also, I’m a high volume rider… avg 20hrs total time per week, for the last 4 years… adding in, cherry-picking TR workouts into those 20hrs for the last 2 years based on areas I’ve wanted to improve. hard to say if I’d see more/less gains with more structure and less volume or not…)
Untrained 216lbs 250 ftp
~200w untrained, now after 2years of training 550hours/year at a solid 345-350w (5,3w/kg) without any drugs
btw im 18
- I’m up to 206 right now
First time I tested after riding around for a couple of weeks was 290W (4.1 W/kg)
My FTP was around 150 - 160 a year ago after a year of doing nothing, which equated to under 2w/KG. I am now at 314W and just over 4W/KG after a year of Training and hope I have some more room to move up.
Are you god?
Used to run at a high level and being 23 never hurt anyone
