What workout did you do today? (2020, part 1)

First hot ride and I took 3 bottles (24 ounces)

I’ve caught few of those types of calculative glitches as well… My screen showed a consistent number for almost every interval, but then afterwards in the summary, the “target power” number was down by 12 watts or something. Not a huge deal, cause my significant gains will come from consistency of riding rather than the finer differences between a target power of 306 and 294 or whatever.

Had a little extra time so decided to go for a recovery run.

Any electrolytes in there? How about food? I struggle with hot days.

timeline:

  • ate lunch around 1:30 or 2pm
  • snack around 4pm
  • left at 5:20pm with 3 bottles, 2 with water and 1 with Precision Hydration 1500. No food.
  • ate dinner within 30 minutes of finishing the ride

I’ve used Nuun, Gatorade, Hammer Extreme Enduralytes, and now Precision Hydration. They all work about the same except the Nuun fizzes and leaves a sticky mess on the bike.

Fwiw I only use tailwind for “food” in my rides. My 2 hr today I only used 4 scoops or 400 calories during my ride in 1 bottle. Other bottle was water only.

No food before besides breakfast at 8am which is around 600 calories. Ride was at noon.

I did 5+ hours / 3000+ calorie burn today and used Gu Roctane in one bottle, and two water only bottles. One refill about a third into the ride. Probably should have done a second water stop but wasn’t completely necessary and would have required bonus miles.

Ate a banana and 4 Nature Valley Oats ‘n Honey granola bars. So 500 calories from Roctane and 400 calories from the granola. And water from the banana. Came home and ate real food.

I’m gonna guess you’re pretty highly trained.

Added some Tempo to my Traditional Base.

Not really. Started in 2016 and did some big rides. Trying to get back to doing that again, 8-12 hour weeks riding outside with fewer intervals than TR plans.

Doing lots of base then?

Long rides. Low cadence or hills. Tempo to sweet spot out to threshold. Toss in sprints.

Today was supposed to be Dicks -1, the last hard workout for the first 3 wks of sustained power build. I’m currently in Central California on a work assignment which starts tomorrow, so I figured it would be a good chance to try to do an outside workout. I could not get my Wahoo Bolt to load the workout so I just remembered the description 5 x 8 min at 105% FTP. Well, I went too hard the first interval and my legs went home on the second, so I just did an endurance ride. I’m not used to the heat, it was in the high 80’s.

So got this done today after yesterday’s disappointment of tech issues and follow on ramp tests, only gaining 4w.
Needed to get this sorted to regain a little motivation. Onwards.

A custom variant based on Wright Peak for me today, 2 hours at 85% FTP, done with a good group of fellow masochists. My legs are so tired now, I can hardly move. Still, today is my birthday, so I’m sure I can just sit here, relax, and my family will keep me supplied with coffee, cake and beer. Yeah, sure!

That was a long 2 hours - the first 30 were a bit of a struggle before settling in fully. Terrible night’s sleep, so I’m pretty happy I pushed all the way through.
