Forgot to calibrate so already a good point of doubt. But this felt good. First time testing after getting hit by a car in November and being off the bike for a while. Only did more structural training since 2-3 weeks. Went from 283 from I believe August to now 284 while I was expecting to have lost performance. This while feeling my legs were a bit cooked after Sunday’s hard group ride, on the side of my lungs and heart I felt I could have gone just a bit longer. This kinda changes my outlook on the coming season, I could actually start this season stronger than ever. Another thing I’m working on and is getting better is being able to suffer more, feel like I’m still leaving a lot on the table in races.
Vo2max is, aside from being just generally slow, by far my biggest limiter. I get panic attacks when I’m breathing this hard & tend to jump off the bike, take off & toss my helmet, gloves & on rare occasion my jersey. No, I’m not kidding. Yes, it’s embarrassing. Anyway… this was my first Vo2max workout in TR. I know it’s an entry level effort but I did it. I stayed on the bike & only had a mild freak out during which I took out my ear buds. The panic came especially hard when I let up but I rode it out. Next up is some tranquil over unders on Wednesday.
Good old Taku after 4 days off the bike, fighting a head cold still but needed something today. This after a very easy 2 ride recovery week. Not an ideal start to my plan builder but, plans change. Stay healthy!
I’m on the recovery week at the end of SSBLV2 but I’ve swapped out the “traditional base” workouts for some with a little more variety and interest. The TSS and IF are very similar so there’s not really much more workload.
Anyway, today should have been Pettit but I did Mont Albert. All very steady, I didn’t even start sweating until the 30min point. Err, that’s about the most interesting point of the workout
Increase from 265 to 274!
Shortoff +2. Ouch! Six 4.5 minute intervals at 112%, 114%, 116%, 116%, 114%, and 112%. Four and a half minutes is a really LONG time to hold power well above 100%. That was about as physically and mentally difficult as it gets, especially since 48 hours ago I did my longest run of the season (19 miles). I’m feeling good that I was able to complete it. I had thoughts of quitting the workout in each of the six intervals.
Still finding my legs after the long Christmas holiday, so easy again today and probably for the remainder of the week. Hoping to be champing at the bit next week
First week of SSB MV1 for me. Glassy felt pretty good and was able to perform all drills. The aero ones I held for the entire 15min interval. So far so good.
On the bike at 4:30 this morning for Bluebell +2, extended the warmup a bit and added 20 minutes of 75% at the end. Not a bad way to start the day
Petit+1 for TdZ stage 1 (Short course group ride) finished mid pack. Threw in the sweet spot junk at the end just to finish in time for work. 36hrs recovery now before next short power session.
I was supposed to be doing Mokelumne today but wanted a bit more TSS because I knew (childishly) that that would put me on my highest ever CTL…
So Andrews +1 was picked, and felt harder than I think it should have. Dullsville, even with YouTube etc.
I swapped my scheduled Bluebell for Charybdis. I was flexing (not that I knew at the time) saying I’d do the +1 version, but as it was, I barely got through the normal version with 6 intervals.
I guess the fatigue is building, as I was struggling early on today. Let’s see how Jepson goes on Thursday before I get start getting too hard on myself and recognise these were tough intervals!
And as it’s my double day, I swapped out Petitt for Mont Albert, just cos there’s too many Petitts in this plan!
Bluebell is fun AF! I should do it more often! 100% serious.
Carillon+2 - one of my favourites - varied SS with surges - keeps things interesting for 90 mins after work - especially when I did some weights yesterday including some Hex bar deadlifts and leg press so it was tough but just about manageable.
I’M BACK
First ride back after a two-week vacation followed immediately by a 10-day plague. Knee is still a bit sore from smacking it into a tree root on vacation day 4, and coughing fits abound, but I’m well enough for Pettit at least. I think that’s the first time I’ve finished a full 750ml bottle of water in an hour-long endurance ride.
Bashful +1 +15 minutes z2 extra in the warmup. 2% reduction at varying points of the work intervals… but back to 100% for the next set every time.
