Spanish Needle +2…holy fook. That sucked. (Can you tell I got tired in the second half of the ride?

Bradley -5 today on my country’s 4th day of lockdown!
No races so why should I include any specificity ![]()
I bonked hard at the end
Back to base. Going to do lots of sweetspot and endurance until I hear that we are allowed to congregate in the mean time.
Mount Field & Stage 4 TDW
Took my new Tarmac comp with di2 and disc out for its first ride today and love it.
Also resigned back up for Peloton digital app as they are doing a 90 day free trial. Used to have the bike but sold it a while back. Not due to the service or bike but enjoy my TR and H3 much more. Forgot how much I miss the running workouts and did a couple of meditations already which is my favorite part of the app.
I started the 2nd part of the Sustained Power Build phase. It started with Washington +4; those last 2 intervals were tough. I muscled through them though, but it was the toughest workout to date for me. The cool down even felt tough after the last interval ![]()
First Group ride of the year. Still off the back on the climbs, but my ability to go over threshold and recover is much better
Streak day #135 and the last outdoor ride today as we go into lockdown.
1 x 45 min at 95-100% went well so kept rolling another 15 min and set my highest full hour power in last 12 months by about 10 watts.
Pleased with how this base programming has worked out over the last 4 months. With work from home mandate, will finish out this block and instead of moving on to the planned build block, am going to reset, continue lifting weights and continue to work on TTE.
Long sweet spot today. Am pleased by HR stayed low even knocking at 90%, efficiency is really improving
Went entirely unstructured this week, which was exactly what the doctor ordered. No events coming up, reset my training plan, and otherwise didn’t load TrainerRoad once. I spent most of this week furloughing or laying off employees, bad sleep for obvious reasons, worrying about wife’s job and my future at my job…
So, a bunch of Zwift events, culminating in this one. Paced it well, essentially hour power, finished top 100 out of 570 on Zwift, top 10 in B category on ZwiftPower, beat about 1/3 of the A field FWIW. I still had some gas in the tank too, which is exciting. Did AdZ KOM segment in 50:37 at 270W avg, so that gives me a new realistic goal of hitting sub-50.
Couple of easy days, then into modified Sweet Spot Base MV.
Still on plan for a now postponed event in May…thinking of something else to do instead.
First up, Mount Goode +2
Then I kept on pedalling into Baxter +2
Now wash your hands, please!
I rode outside yesterday, so did Saturday’s workout today. I definitely won’t be blasé about doing the difficult workout 2nd again - that was hard work!
Finished building a new bike and took it out for an hour of single speed mountain biking. Rode around our woods and the farm behind us. Planning to build a little jump line / skill trail since it looks like a while before hitting proper trails again.
This single speed stuff is harder than it looks.
Tweed +9 (and Sugar Water Experiment #2).
After observing performance of 100g liquid carbs/hr, I can state without a doubt, that I’ve been under-carbing my entire cycling life.
And thus concludes my COVID-19 training block.
It didn’t kill me so I must have gotten stronger!

Redo the 20-min overpaced field test from 12 days ago. Pretty good attempt but could have been better executed. Breathing was definitely near max and according to TrainingPeaks it was a personal best 20-min heart rate. Bumping ftp to 243W and I have to say these past 6 weeks of training were pretty “easy” compared to TR SSB1 or SSB2 and yet I’m right about where TR base gets me. Next year I’m thinking of giving TR’s Full Distance Triathlon base a try, because the long 4-7 hour endurance rides from this block I just finished were a winner.
Anything you manage to finish is better than anything you crack halfway through imo.
Well done on sticking with the training, no matter what ![]()
