I’ve had a ton of business travel lately, been out of twon 3-4 weeks per month since February and not on a structured plan right now. Tried McAddie last night and died, now I’m suicidal, lol. CX is six months away and I’m going backwards, goal was 4w/kg with a 75-minute 300w NP.
I just could not get the legs going, could still be lingering illness from last week when I caught yet another cold, probably from airline travel, was pretty furious.
Recovery week and I drove to ride start, and mostly stayed off the back to ride in zone2 (ended up 50% in zone2). We did have a strong 20mph wind gusting to 28mph, so keeping watts between 125-175W made things “interesting” (slow rolling) but hey a Cat1 drops in from time to time and does the same.
ugh, black hawk +5, 4x10 at 105% but only did 2, one was poor. Aside from the first one of these extended 105% sessions for sustained power build, these have been a bit of disaster for me, really wanted to get better at these. It’s a combo between mental and physical at the moment, I think, but won’t sweat it as the rest of the build has gone perfectly, plus I’m going to go back to SSB2 soon anyway
on the bright side, I set an all-time 10min power
edit for an afterthought: in hindsight I kind of wish I had done workouts from sustained build mid volume for these suprathreshold efforts. I had success in the past with doing stuff at 102% and should have maybe focused on doing long efforts at 102% Even with lowering intensity, once you get a really hard effort in the legs it seems just as hard to do things even when backed off a bit.
Today was my first crack at an outside workout. It’s recovery week for me so this was Bridger, basically a 90 minute aerobic ride. For somebody with lower-category ambitions like me, outdoor workouts might be the perfect thing. I can crank one out on my commute and feel great about the day, plus I got to ride my bike outside which is the whole point ultimately.
Queen??
Tonight I had another of those ‘outside’ rides. Spring has sprung and with the hour change there’s enough light to get it after work. Not necessarily enough warmth just yet though…brrr…
I think on the flats but into a headwind or with a slight (2%) gradient is where I can put out my FTP for the longest. If it is flat with no headwind, or a really steep climb, then fatigue comes quicker for the same amount of power. I guess that also supports the idea that poor pedaling efficiency is one of my limiters?
Was a really busy week last week with my wife out of town on business, so I was solo with my daughter. After that 2 hour trail run the week before it kind of threw off my training schedule along with not being able to go on a run, and well simply having trouble even going downstairs for most of the week. crazy part was it was a relatively easy effort trail run, but elevation is elevation even if you are power hiking the ups, we did make up some speed coming down and downhill running can do a number on your quads.
Starting XCO this week… having a few challenges. Definitely at the top FTP that i’ll be able to handle this cycle. I did bag the last interval in Bear -1 after doing the second to last one with the mentality to do it as if it was the last and knowing I should go that deep in the well in week one, so bagged the last interval. Going to have a C race next week, so still trying to decide how to balance out the intensity for next week.
Darwin. After suffering through Palisade last weekend, woke up with some lactic acid in the legs from yesterday’s workout and did not look forward to threshold work, but it went surprisingly well. This stuff really is 80% mental…
From what I have read about it the difference seems to be in slow vs fast twitch fibers and different muscles recruitment thanks to the different position on the bike. Faster speed (bigger inertia) favors fast twitch muscles while steep climbs are the opposite. Also, apparently, on the climbs you use more glutes.
If I were to guess I would think you have more fast twitch fibers and hence you prefer flattish terrain. But I am certainly no expert!
Long ride Friday today: started with McCadie +1 for some low cadence torque and threshold work straight into Geiger-5 for some sweet spot tempo and then finished off with some aerobic endurance with high cadence sprints. Good stuff
