Taylor -2. Really just a rude awakening as the first workout of my week.
I started in ERG mode and changed gears for the VO2 intervals, and it took my (Elite Qubo Digital Smart B+) trainer a good 10 seconds to match the target power. Half-way through the first set switched to resistance mode, and then I took 10 seconds. (I tried to match my interval average power to the target, which was probably counter-productive.) Swapped back to ERG and maintained the same gear and cadence (well, tried) for the next set: 10 seconds to match. So whatever. Hopefully 20 seconds at 120% is close enough. ![]()
I wouldn’t quite call it VO2 work.
Last week before taper of SSB-LV2. The cumulative training fatigue of winter training is catching up so grind through this week, enjoy a taper and rest next week and by then it should be clear enough to get outdoors comfortably and enjoy the fruits of the labour.
Yesterday was Spencer +2. 3-minute VO2 intervals are a nutbuster. The first minute lulls you into this feels OK, the second is hard work, the third minute is just get me through grind.
Monadnock +5 for me today (6x4min @ 115%) tough stuff, nailed 4 of the 6, last 2 required brief pauses in the final min, I’ll consider it a win! Still have some work to master strategies to keep my cadence up and not let myself get into a slowdown in the final min of tough intervals. This is the last week of sustained power build HV and will likely go back to SSB2 after this so I think I’ll enjoy the break from the suffering!
Yesterday was 20x1’ followed by a 30min (trail) run.
Garmin Vectors dropped a few times. TR paused because of 2-3 of those dropouts. Batteries are reportedly 50% but…
Massage last night meant no (trail) run this morning. Did swim, and it felt horrible. Likely because I skimped big time on lunch. Really disappointed because I had my own lane the whole time! Dragged my body across the pool a couple hundred meters before just lopping off 700m from the planned workout (for 3800m instead of 4500m).
A short ride and run tomorrow before 20hrs of flying, plus one layover, followed by 2.5wks of no saddle time. Will treat it as a ‘run camp’ and get refocused on running (without breaking myself). Plus some swimming, including at Bondi beach. Hopefully, I won’t become a statistic: “another tourist eaten by a shark.”
Ramp test. Meh. Lower test again. The Vortex Smart didn’t seem to want to push back at me in Erg, and high cadence seemed to mess up the Stages L again
Or, maybe I’m just getting slower! -2.4% to be precise.
Things have been trending downward since I turned on PowerMatch, but maybe my old tests were optimistic!
2071 kcal and 295g CHO so far today. I will re-test next week in Resistance mode, or try the 2x8 protocol.
A somewhat disappointing ramp test… but also totally expected as I’ve been carrying a lot of fatigue over the last few weeks and haven’t kept as closely to the prescribed training plan as would be ideal. Also a swap in power source which could contribute slightly to the lower number (229 → 220).
Followed by a cool down…
4600m Swim
3x 800m at an all day pace around 15mins.
I was planning two more 800s but joined the “hydro class” that took over the pool for a variety of sets FC and PB for another 2200m.
Also got some tips, apparently I could extend my stroke a lot more with a bit more rotation. And my catch is almost edge on. Who knows eh? ![]()

You need to cultivate your “Don’t even effing speak to me” pool look. ![]()
Ramp test!
I know, right?!
Got in a quick ride this morning, started before dawn, ended about dawn. Tried to get a pic of some kind of mammal on the 2nd half (a longish guy sort of like a ferret but slightly bulkier, definitely not a cat) but he skirted off before I could pull the GoPro out.
Followed by a short run.
Bets on when TR announces a Garmin app to run the outdoor workouts (which is what I figure is the next big announcement)? During the Garmin IQ summit this week?
Did anyone else struggled so hard to complete Baird Peak (by the end of general build plan)?
First time I felt so destroyed after a TR workout.
About half of Pettit.
It’s not a proud day…
