So various Wahoo computers have a GPS bug that just got activated for everyone. I noticed that my Elemnt was showing the time as being one hour behind the actual time. I thought that was extremely odd because it gets the time from GPS and having very accurate clocks is essential to the way GPS figures out your location.
Then when I synced my ride to my phone it didn’t show up in my ride history. I did some searching online and it turns out I’m not the only one. It’s a bug related to date information in GPS.
See this thread in the Wahoo forum.Essentially it’s a date counter running out of values and rolling over, which caused the Wahoo head units to think that the date today is Jan 1, 2006. Tomorrow it’ll think it’s Jan 2, etc. And since there’s daylight savings time here, the clock was offsetting the time like it is in January.
And sure enough, when I filtered my rides to 2006, there was today’s ride file.
@dcrainmaker this would make a good article / video
Edit: Apparently some Lezyne GPS are affected too, so the bug may be in the GPS chip firmware rather than in Wahoo’s code. That’s no comfort to us users though. In fact, if this bug is in supplier code it might take longer to fix since Wahoo and Lezyne would have to wait on the supplier who might not be as motivated to quickly create a fix.
Edit 2: Ray posted an article on it. Apparently it’s only the older Wahoo units that are affected, not the newer ones. Wahoo acknowledges the issue and is urgently working on a fix. But they still might be hampered by a supplier. Time will tell.
I had the same yesterday. The clock was out and the GPS tracking was all over the place on my ride - following a route was impossible (fortunately I was in a group so didn’t have to rely on it) and the ride map it produced when I uploaded at the end was nonsense.
Yeah V1 only affected, both my wife and I have been affected, its an annoyance not having the data to see but more importantly we both use the tracker side to make sure we are safe, with this so wildly inaccurate at the moment I’m more disappointed at this. Latest info from Wahoo is they are testing firmware and to keep checking their support page.
Ended up with my Wahoo clocking 2 hours at 291 NP, but 0 km.. Yes, the race was outdoors.
A bit lucky I could see my power, cause spent almost half the race in a solo break with no idea on how fast I was going. Did not do a difference, but still special.
I’m also affected, I first noticed the issue three days ago when my Bolt v1 wouldn’t stay locked onto the GPS satellites. I initially assumed the GPS antenna was faulty, and was “glad” it was only a software problem.
This morning my time would alternate between the correct time and being 1 hour behind. I assume 1024 weeks ago falls during winter time (and not daylight savings).
For the time being I’m using my Rival’s GPS to record outdoor rides.
This is a tad frustrating. I noticed the GPS drop out during my ride on Sunday but the data seemed to be OK when it synced with Strava.
I’d planned to attempt a half-Everesting this coming bank holiday weekend (uk) but if the GPS tracking is even a tiny bit off it’s going to mess it all up. Might have to rely on the Strava app on my phone - accepting no HR / Cadence / Power data will be recorded.
Wahoo sent me an email out of the blue on Monday as pasted below:
Argh!! Happened to me today today exactly as you described. The time on my BOLT display was an hour behind and I thought that was really odd. The entire ride it bothered me and I swore it was all connected to GPS. Get home and can’t find my ride. I checked the live tracking link I sent to my husband and it says I rode on January 5th (not Aug 21). Frustrating.
Anyone know if there is a way to change the date on a ride manually?
Did anyone else experience setting resets too? My unit started beeping on activity pauses which is has never been on and my workout page also changed back to what I presume the default. I have a bolt v1
