Using TR and Zwift Concurrently

I know this will cause you to buy more stuff (but who doesn’t love buying things?) Couldnt you get an HRM that transmits both BLE and ANT+? Like the Garmin HRM dual/HRM pro? Then you could have TR receive everything and keep the zwift distraction.

INTERESTING. My tickr might already transmit ANT+. I didnt even think of that! I’ll try TR with bluetooth off and the tickr on, and see if it picks up.

I’m dumb!

  • It does both (BLE & ANT+) simultaneously.

well I guess it’s time for me to cancel my zwift cancellation and get that sweet, sweet tron bike

I load Zwift first and pair everything via Ant+ (the weaker of the two signals for me given the distance the computer is from the bike), then I load TR and pair everything via BLE. I also dual record on a head unit connected to everything via Ant+ (since there are unlimited connections).

Depends on the gear, obviously, but I run a 2018 Kickr and Garmin Vector 3 on TR and Zwift in parallel to iPhone and iPad (or now AppleTV) via BT alone. My Tickr HRM only connects to one or the other, but I keep it on TR for my training recording. If I’m doing a no-kidding Z race, then HR goes to Z and I don’t run TR.

I do events in Z all the time running a TR-powered workout and play the same game Chad mentioned. Sometimes, I’ll even chat over to the group and offer “Free bridging pulls for the next XX minutes starting in 1 minute!” Some people on here have said those kinds of things ruin the mechanics of the event for people who are riding inside Zwift alone, but that’s why I generally only do it on the “group ride” events rather than actual races.

Answering the old question: most of the time, I just do random routes for something to look at.

FWIW I wrote an article on running both here

I select routes to a) complete routes I haven’t done and get the badges, or b) climb as much as possible to get closer to the 50km target, or c) just have something to look at that somehow matches the workout (flatish roads for sweet spot, climbs for harder intervals).

Same (on a single Win10 PC). Both antennas are at the same location (dongles at the end of a USB extension cable near my front wheel), but I still do that same sequence and assignment (Z > ANT+, TR > BT) because it has been the most stable. I get no dropouts these days. Z runs in windowed mode (it hogs the screen when in full-screen mode), TR in minimized mode at the bottom of the screen, the whole on a 55’ TV. No sound ( I couldn’t care less about Z’s sound track), music from my phone to BT ear buds. Talk about sensory overload…

Back at earlier levels, same - get the Tron bike (done) and complete route badges (done, except PRL Full and Uber Pretzel). Now on easier days, I use the pace partners (2.5W/kg on pettit-type days) sometimes. That makes the time go by quicker, for sure.

Anyone here notice their HR is elevated if they’re paying attention to Zwift?

I tried running Zwift for the first time together with TR during my recovery week. During Z2 rides my HR seemed to be a good 10bpm higher all across the board if I’m watching the virtual world go by versus watching something on YouTube or Netflix.

It’s what you’re used to, but increased cognitive load will elevate your heart rate. I notice it during Z2 rides when my kids are talking to me.

Cara Cadence is a great addition to zwift for this I’ve found. Although now racing is back, I’m more likely to catch up on that, but certainly over the winter I used them regularly. They were great when I was taking a break from “structure” - Barry Brevet if I wanted something a bit harder, Cara Cadence for a bit of a butter burner.

Yup, I really like using the Pacers as alternatives to Z2 ERG rides some days.

No, I don’t notice HR going up - but I do notice cadence increasing when I (stupidly) try to speed up to catch up with someone (and fail of course since I’m in erg mode).

I DON’T like when they have CC going on the hilly loop. Makes what’s supposed to be an easy ride more stochastic than I really like on those days. But it is more realistic.

LOL, I haven’t stumbled on one of those yet. I luck out and get to stay on the flats all the times I’ve tried.

I did a Bowie one through Sand & Seq which was fun and felt a lot like a typical road ride with pace changes and such. Really fun and surprising when you consider it’s done with a bot :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure if that was posted in this thread before, but if you use Zwift and TR on a Windows PC, this tool here is quite useful and became even better with the latest updates (autohide taskbar, remove window borders around zwift window…).

(I’m not the author, just a user of said tool)

Cheers!

Hey all,
a Heads Up (pun intended…) for us Zwift and TR together crowd: With the latest Zwift Update you can press H (or use a button on screen or in the companion app) to hide the HUD from the Zwift screen completely. As most relevant numbers are displayed in TR anyway that’s a nice way to declutter the screen and up the immersion factor. Especially when combined with camera 3 (POV).
@GPLama discusses this in his video also: ZWIFT Updates April 2021: Hide Display Mode // LOTS of Fixes // ZwiftPower Decision Back Pedal - YouTube

Cheers,
