Training When Sick, Weight Gain to Build Power, Anemia and much more – Ask a Cycling Coach 232

You might have added a bit of muscle with those 10 pounds. I’m not convinced though that just not checking every day lead to weight gain. Did you change your nutrition?

Yes well done @Nate_Pearson for hopefully putting an end to the speed/distance obsession on indoor cycling :+1::pray::pray::pray:

Rear position of the cleats forces some adjustments which are all aero negative.
I wonder if the bio mechanical gains are enough to compensate for that.

@ValeCyclist hoping to see that too, I did ramp test last night and Strava still showing speed and distance

No idea. I found it counter-intuitive and didn’t put much effort into researching it past my basic review.

There was no deliberate change in my diet. Perhaps I subconsciously ate more knowing that I wouldn’t be weighing myself in the morning?

That one might be OK. I haven’t looked at any other tests other than the food “sensitivity” panel.

@chad,

Thanks for trying to find information on endurance training with my weird anemia. Don’t feel bad for not finding anything, I’ve asked a couple of sources, and the response has been collective “no info available”, which isn’t too surprising given that that the prevalence of this is probably something like 0.00001% - 0.00003%.

For anyone who is interested, I have a condition (pretty rare. Best estimate is it afflicts 1 in 100,000 people) where my body produces too many platelets, so I’m on medication to inhibit the production of platelets. My anemia is a side effect of this medication.

If you have a deficiency it will limit muscle building, but if there is no deficiency creatine just makes for expensive excretions.

Thank you Nate!

I had to share that when @Chad and the others were discussing his subscription for organic, free-range meat, I had to (quietly) chuckle. I was sitting and waiting to be blessed with a very nice high quality free range, organic meat to appear in front of me. I was blessed for that to happen, twice, that day.

Raw milk – everyone dies from something. Some have died. Millions have lived. Know the source. Know everything about it. My parents, grandparents, and great grandparents all drank raw milk. Cow → bucket → glass. I know those that drink it today. Same setup for them – goat → bucket → glass.

Just need @Nate_Pearson round for some cooking lessons! (Actually, even I can probably manage to cook something edible in this!)

For someone with @Nate_Pearson’s sinus condition, how do you know when not to ride because you always feel sickly?

@Tucker i’ve been trying to find the podcast where Coach Chad mentions what levels of training should be done when you feel under the weather. I think he mentioned that if it’s anything above the chest to only stick to recovery type rides and if the chest/etc are feeling weak then to skip the workouts completely.

Any chance you can point me to that podcast or where i can find more info? I have a feeling i’m getting sick and want to know best tips for when to know to rest vs pushing it to keep on my training plan.

Also, thanks for the great work on the podcast notes!

I do remember Coach Chad talking about that. Let me take a look and see if I can find it!
