Tapering for Multi Day Event

I appreciate this may have been asked a fair few times but here goes

Currently training for the North Cape 4000 on July 25th so 4000kms in around 3 weeks. For uninteresting reasons I only started training on the bike on the 16th May and before that was mainly running 50 to 70kms a week since Jan for marathon training. Because I started late I am trying to maximize my time on the bike as the distances I am aiming for our a stretch for me.

Current training plan is 2 x Z2 4 to 6 hour rides on the weekend, 2 x 3 hour rides during the week with some kind of a workout and then 1 x short ride mainly hill climbing.

Research indicates I should do a two week taper with 50 percent reduction in training load in taper week 1 and then mainly polishing my bike and avoiding buying stuff I don’t need on week 2 of taper with 2 x super short sessions to keep legs awake.

Does this seem reasonable for a multi week event? Is it correct that freshness is the main priority as no fitness will really happen in those last two weeks? I know it’s a beginner question but main experience I have is for running and the taper isn’t as drastic.

Welcome to the forum!

You want to recover from all the hard work you’ve done leading up to your taper and try to avoid any more fatigue. With that being said, you can also lose fitness in two weeks, so you typically try to keep some short, but hard workouts in place to ensure that you’re keeping your fitness from falling before race day.
