How long a taper should I take?

I’ve been following a training programme since last year in preparation for my ultra endurance event starting on 29th June.

What I’ve just realised is that the programme has given me absolutely no type of taper… giving me the usual 5x a week workouts right up to race day.

How long a taper should I take? Or perhaps I’m misunderstanding and the programme is right and no taper is required?

Usually in a taper week (or 2 weeks), the amount of workouts remains the same. Keeping intensity but cutting out volume.
Normally, these workouts in the taper week are way shorter, should be like 30min each if they normally are 1h. So you are doing way less load, but keeping intensity and frequency up.

Ahh gotcha… in that case all is good… I was expecting a taper to be something more like a recovery week… not threshold and VO2 max workouts (albeit it theyre shorter as you note)

Yeah, but if it’s for a Ultra endurance event like you said, I would consider cutting out the intensity in the last week aswell.
Depending on the length of the event, you just want to be as fresh as possible. And you care less about sharpness or race style efforts. But that’s for you to decide.

Have you marked your event as an A race? TR will not add tapers to C events and just a little taper to B events.

Yes its an A race… added as a stage race as its multiple consecutive days.

@Aradell has the right idea here.

It looks like you currently have a proper taper in place. Your volume for those two weeks leading up to your event has substantially less volume than normal, but you still have some hard workouts.

If you have any other questions about this, feel free to reach out! :slightly_smiling_face:

Best of luck with your race! :crossed_fingers:
