Request: Change Default Sport upload type to "Virtual Ride" in Strava

I prefer the term ‘faux’ gps

One thing I’ve learned as a product manager, is that it’s easy to notice a percentage of people who are asking for a change to be made in your product, and not ask how many partners are happy with how things are currently. So here’s my vote, I’m perfectly happy with the current default. Making this an “setting” would be preferable to me rather than an across-the-board change. Maybe a “leave it as is” from a existing users perspective and those users can switch the default in their trainer road settings upon the feature being released, and maybe for new users, change to the new default, still allowing them to set their default preference.

“As a trainerroad user connected to their strava account, I would like to choose what the default ride type is when uploading my workout, so that I don’t have to constantly login to Strava and change this to my preference after ever ride/upload”

Acceptance criteria:
-Add a setting that will dictate what ride type my workouts are uploaded as in strava.
-For existing users: The default should be what the product currently does, as not to confuse users who may not be aware of this new feature. Users who are aware of and care to change this, may do so in the settings
-For new users: Make the new default “Virtual Rides”

Adding myself as another user who thinks “Virtual Ride” should be the default, and I would like to at least have the option of setting TrainerRoad to do that.

Disappointingly, Strava has completely removed Virtual Ride as an activity choice as of this week. It started a few weeks ago when they removed it from the mobile apps, and now it’s gone from the desktop/browser interface too. Annoyed by this change by Strava. They could have waited until January 1st, or at least announced it.

@davidtinker This was one of the primary ways I separated my indoor vs outdoor rides on Intervals.icu. Will this affect Intervals’ functionality?

Really? I wonder what the reasoning would be for this. I can’t imagine it took any more resources for them to have an extra category. Bizarre.

I just changed one of my rides to virtual ride on Intervals.icu and the change pushed through to Strava. So it looks like the API still supports “Virtual Ride”.

Same, but now your site is the only way I can save my TrainerRoad rides as Virtual Rides!

Now that Strava has finally let users set default equipment by activity type, I think this feature should be revisited. It would be nice if Strava was able to recognize that an activity came from TR and select the correct bike for it.

This! Strava’s new feature is great as all my activities automatically associate with a bike (almost perfectly), but the indoor rides do not. If they were all “Virtual Ride” it would be perfect.

Please do it, would be perfect with new Strava functionality !

Is this possible as a quick implementation, or as a optional setting?
Finally Strava is able to assign gear based on activity type and now TR is messing it up by setting a TR uploaded ride as a “Workout Ride”.

Adding my voice here in the hopes of bumping the thread. Would starting a new one get more traction given this is on the older side?

  • No, it wouldn’t. TR reps replied here and are aware of the request, and they will see new replies even within the oldest topics on the forum. Couple that with the fact that new comments bump a topic up to the top of the “Latest” sort method and this will be plenty visible despite the age of the OP at the top.

  • With the aim of “Keep it tidy” per the forum guidelines, we keep related discussion in the same thread most of the time, especially when it is singularly focused as this one is.

Y’all need activityfix: https://www.activityfix.com/

It can do everything you want and more!

Seconded (thirded, fourthed, …).

I didn’t care about this before but with Strava’s new feature it would be very handy indeed.

Yeh, the Strava change means this has gone from a should-do to a must-do IMO.

I’m not even sure how anyone developing this thought it was a good idea NOT to automatically classify these as Virtual Rides.

Adding my vote here to change these to default to Virtual Ride, manually revising these activities is a bit of a drag especially when Strava now has this functionality.

Changing it to Virtual Ride would make it much less of a hassle to have to manually update my bike after every ride. I track my equipment usage with Strava which helps a ton.
Zwift (which I use simultaneously as part of my BYOE) correctly categorizes the ride as Virtual, if that’s any additional marketing motivation.
I’d rather post the TR activity but if it means I have to change my bike all the time maybe I’ll go back to posting Zwift.
(Just kidding I still prefer posting TR, but help!)

This should be a very simple fix. I don’t have Strada’s APIs but I suspect it is a matter of setting a simple enumeration in the request to Strava. Likely one or two lines of code. TrainerDay gets this right as well.
