Yeah, that’s the issue, I’m on the beta (which seems better) but still getting issues:
You’ll see the little symbols flicker before anything happens, but you won’t get a ‘workout paused’.
Normally the resistance dips for a short while & then it seems power-match & the kickr have a little argument.
When the resistance drops I can see the bluetooth broadcast’d power from the kickr ramp up quickly (I’m guessing this is powermatch trying to recover from the reduced power being reported from the powermeter). Sometimes this results in a big spike in resistance at the pedals, but most times it doesn’t as the resistance is quickly reduced to a more appropriate point.
I did stumble over something interesting recently. Sometimes I’ll spin on the devices screen for a few minutes, normally around 100W as a pre-warmup. I was doing this & there was a kickr dropout, it resulted in the resistance going way up to ~300W, stopping pedaling I noticed that the kickr was still broadcasting a non-zero speed (even though the flywheel had stopped). Pushed the pedals & the kickr then broadcast 0 speed. Started spinning again & I was back to the usual 100W. That may be completely unconnected, but it seemed of note.
Is it possible to have an update from TrainerRoad support on which version is safe to use and whether or not the bug has been fixed.
If it has not been fixed what are the next steps.
I have not used TR for several weeks as I had a stable version and I did not want to lose any functionality in the upgrade. I am on the beta release.
John, I would think that depends on whether you setup has had issues or not. If not then you probably don’t want to worry about it. It only seems to be affecting people on Windows machines (from only looking at a very small snapshot of comments within this thread).
Thanks @Woody. I am on Ant+ Kick 2018 and Windows 10 - think it might affect me which is why I am cautious.
PS Not stopped training because of it - just trialling Xert instead.
I have done two workouts with this beta and have had ZERO Dropouts!!! This is very rare for my experience and has only happened once before (a single workout) in the last 3-4 months. IMHO these dropouts were ‘adding’ to my mental toughness, or at least I kept telling myself that. I had opened a support ticket with TR and received exceptional support (but no fix). I also pursued MicroSoft support and with identical experience and no fix. Knock on wood but this really works - Many thanks…
First of all, thank you very much for your patience with this. I know it is really inconvenient when we break stuff, especially pieces that were working fine before we updated. We always want to get you the newest coolest stuff we can, and even though we have an awesome Test Team and a ton of testing around everything we do, sometimes we can’t foresee every scenario. We always learn something from situations like these, and we are constantly adding more to our processes to keep them from happening in the future.
We have an updated Beta (2019.10.3.89796) that just launched with the newest version of the fix, and we will be able to continue our regular release cycle, so this fix will be in production within the next day or two. Those of you who were affected should automatically download the newest version of the Beta (2019.10.3.89796) and I will post here in this thread when the changes are released to production and you can get back on the normal version of the application. Once that happens, you are free to swap back to the production application if you would like.
What this beta release does:
• Wahoo KICKRs should have standard mode available again when paired to Windows via ANT+.
o As always, Wahoo KICKRs will have standard mode available when paired via Bluetooth.
• Wahoo KICKRs should no longer be showing as power meters due to old firmware when paired to Windows via ANT+.
• We hope that reports of Wahoo KICKR dropouts when paired to Windows via ANT+ will decrease.
None of our recent changes should have had any impact on devices other than the KICKR connected via ANT+ on Windows. If you’re a user experiencing ANT+ dropouts on any other devices, please shoot support@trainerroad.com a message and we’ll do our best to have you back on the bike without issues as soon as possible.
Not everyone is having these issues. I have for more than a year used both ANT+ and Bluetooth with different speed sensors and a 4iiii power meter without any dropouts ever, paired to an Android phone. Just wanted to add that, because it sounds like the TR app is a disaster and nothing else is to blame.
What I have found though, is that you can’t have ANT+ and Bluetooth active at the same time (disable Bluetooth if you’re not using it). Wifi (2,4/5GHz) doesn’t cause dropouts in my crowded apartment building.
As @KickrLin mentioned, be sure that you’re on the latest Beta to make sure you’re using the most up to date version of the app.
If you are on the latest version of the app, and you’re still having these issues, we would love to have our Support Team take a closer look to see what is going on. You can shoot us an email at support@trainerroad.com, and we’ll get back to you shortly
That did the trick for me. The last 4 workouts were without connection loss. Before it was usually once during a workout (annoying but not critical). The Wahoo was connected via Bluetooth and ANT+ … at least it looked like that in the TrainerRoad App. When I disable Bluetooth it seems to be stable. Got my Wahoo end of December 2018, and the first few weeks were without the disconnection problem.
Setup:
Wahoo Kickr Core 2018
Android 9 - Garmin ANT+ USB Stick with OTG Adapter
This isn’t a window’s only problem as I’ve been experiencing the same issues as everyone else since the update a few weeks ago.
Next week I’m going to try disabling TR’s power-match & turning on the kickr’s internal power-match to see if this resolves or at least alters the behavior.
So, If you’re on a Mac, then you should probably open a support ticket via support@trainerroad.com
I’m on a Mac using ANT+. No dropouts like what is being described above. Are you using ANT+ or Bluetooth? If ANT+, are you selecting Wahoo Kickr or Wahoo FE-C xxxx when pairing your Kickr? What external power meter are you using? Battery good?
You can disable power match and still use your own on bike power meter. Or you can disable power match and use the Kickr power meter. I would try both while recording to my Garmin as well.
This is interesting, I only get offered Wahoo Kickr, not Wahoo FE-C, so I’m wondering if this is related to the ANT+ dongle used. I’ve ordered a Tacx T2028 ANT+ dongle which I’m told is FEC. That should arrive early next week for me to test.
On my mac I also only get Wahoo Kickr (no FE-C) option.
Last night I setup the Kickr to match the power meter & removed the power meter from Trainerroad. Whilst it was only an endurance workout I did get the pedals going light a few times & it overshot on the return too.
So this isn’t a powermatch problem, simply a kickr + trainerroad issue.
It seems to be related to how trainerroad/kickr handle dropouts in the updated version. Previously if there was a drop out the resistance would be maintained (which could be annoying at the start/end of an interval, but generally wasn’t an huge issue). Now it seems that dropouts can cause the resistance to fluctuate mid-interval.
I might try connecting over bluetooth, although I’m a little reticent to do this as the kickr’s power match is ~10w off & I’d loose ant+ HR data.
