After this summer, my ftp have decreased due to me skipping a lot of workouts. This month I have stepped up my game, and have been doing all workouts. Before updating my app today, I was on 260 ftp. Then new detection took me down to 258. Ai prediction says 260 in a month. I am 50, and my plan is masters so most of my workouts is low intensity. Prior years I’ve had a “normal” plan with fewer but more intense workouts. I’m wondering if my plan is wrong? I started this January with ftp 260, have finished all (I think) my workouts, and the predictions says 260 in a month? Am I stuck at this plateau?
TrainerRoad AI is finally here. Hallelujah! I already had a training plan scheduled. AI FTP prediction says in 4 weeks my FTP will decrease by 7W. Why would I want to follow a plan that decreases my FTP?! I’m using TR to improve my FTP. Should I delete my existing plan and replace it?
1 Beta thread for this stuff
2 change the sliders
Best guess would be that the TR AI has determined that your current plan is too aggressive and you will not recover properly to increase your FTP. Next guess would be that your plan isn’t one that is actually designed to increase your FTP. (Remember that the FTP metric is generally defined as the power you could hold for an hour. What happens after that hour might well be that you’re done for the day, or week. So, if your training for an event that is, say, 5 hours long, training to increase your 1 hour power may not be the best course of action, even if an ever-increasing FTP sounds wonderful.)
I’m on a balanced plan, so I don’t think it’s too aggressive. And I had 278 ftp in June, so we’re not talking about everincreasing ftp, just trying to figure out what plan will get me back to a level I thought was within my reach.
I’m training for a long distance race, so you’re right about ftp not being the ultimate metric, but no increase still makes me wonder if somethings off
Same with me
got Ai FTP today. Now says my FTP will decrease in 28 days ![]()
Added working sets (0→7) to my scheduled strength training once a week. Predicted ftp up from 260→265. Then changed day of week for strength training, same volume, predicted ftp 260→260. Changed strength training day back, still same volume, predicted ftp still 260→260. Confused

everyone now slide it to the left… check your ftp prediction.
slide it to the right… check your ftp prediction
Great, thanks
Check out these threads from Nate that go over these scenarios in detail:
I have the same issue. I think this AI thing is complete rubbish! I played around with the training plan making it easier and making it harder and no matter what I do, it says that my FTP will decrease even though I’m asking it to create a plan that will increase FTP. I guess I’ll just ignore it and go by feel.
Or just do the workouts scheduled and rate them appropriately. If TR system notices you keep rating sessions supposed to be hard as easy/moderate, it will give harder sessions over time, which should affect positively your predicted FTP.
I don’t know if this is because I have 3 years worth of data but the intensity is spot on for me and API FTP prediction is currently at +6.2% in 5 days. It has been quite stable since the release of the feature. I’ll see in 5 days if it matches. But honestly in my case, I stopped trying to do my own planning and just follow the plan given my availability and it’s been relieving not to worry about it and just do the sessions.
So is the “AI” just based on perceived effort? Perceived effort is an opinion and is not based on any measurable metrics. That is pretty subjective and not terribly scientific.
That would kind of be like a doctor asking how you feel rather than doing a blood test. I was hoping that it would be a bit more sophisticated than that.
In my opinion you underestimate how important is RPE not only for AI, but for general structural training. Lets say your couch prescribes you 2x20 sweet spot and afterwards he asked you how it went, you say “easy”. For your next workout your couch will prescribe different target power for the same intervals to drive proper adaptations and to make your next workouts to feel more like sweet spot. TRai does the same thing, I think it safe to say that RPE has validating role, you confirm that workout was at proper intensity . Plenty of folks on the forum did marked threshold workouts “easy”, but with HR at threshold %, this drives the system crazy. I rely a lot on RPE i can feel instantly if something is off. No gadget would tell you better how you felt during workout.
Hundred percent agree I’ve seen more than one grand tour head coach say that they base future workouts upon RPE answers from riders which they ask them each morning
Today years old I realize I am HORRIBLE at knowing my RPE. Lol
TR knows me better than myself.
Today’s workout: VO2 max 6x2 min
Half way through first rep I am thinking no way ZERO chance I make it through even one more
End up going 5% higher for the last rep. And then think WOW I wish that there were more reps ![]()
