Newbie Plan Selection

Hi all,

Quick backstory: in 2024 I hit my best ever fitness thanks to training for an Everesting attempt, which I managed to complete in September. Big high point for me.

Then life got in the way — new job, much less time on the bike, and I basically went from 5–6 riding days a week (~11hrs / 150mi / 240km) to zero. By the time I realised the role wasn’t right and switched jobs in May 2025, I’d gained about 2 stone (12kg) and lost nearly all my fitness.

Since May I’ve been getting back into it — averaging ~5hrs / 75mi (120km) per week across 3–4 riding days, mostly from a short 6-mile (9.6km) commute each way. I’ve also jumped on a few longer club rides (~70mi / 110km one a month since July), but understandably I’m way off the pace, especially on climbs, and that’s been frustrating compared to where I was last year.

The good news: I’ve already dropped a stone (6kg) since May and I’m feeling motivated again. Plan is to start TrainerRoad on 1st October 2025 and run through to mid-March 2026 with a simple goal — be fitter, enjoy club rides again without being dropped, and keep working on weight loss.

I’d love some advice on which TR plan(s) would suit me best for that goal with a commitment level of 5-6 hrs a week.

Thanks in advance!

Hey @StevenG

Great to hear you are getting back into it!

I would recommend letting TR build you a custom training plan.

You can choose an Event/Race or General Fitness plan to suit your goal.

You can set how many days a week you’d like to train, for how long, and the type of riding!
