New Plan Volume Lower Than Current Plan

I’m finishing up my current ftp builder plan and currently do two 90min hard workouts, 30min easy, 1 2hr hard, and 1 flexible easy ride up to 2hr. I was going to setup my next plan, ftp build again but 5 months instead of 3, and the plan drops a bunch of volume: the 90min workouts are 60, and the 2hr workouts are 60min. Should I just have the system pick that volume and adjust the volume after each block?

I’ve had the same thing happen to me. Went from riding without TR in the summer (no structure, too much volume) then jumped into a Trainer Road “Increasing FTP” for 3 months when indoor season kicked in. I had 2 hr over under rides on Saturday that turned into 1.5 hr over unders when I started my custom gravel race plan for a race on Aug 8.

When I started my custom gravel race plan. I reached out via email, and they told me that the drop in TSS is intended. “Usually, each block doesn’t have to increase in TSS as some weeks you won’t do as intense workouts as each step doesn’t have to be bigger than the one before, so as long as you’re training consistently you’re all good.”

I followed with a question about durability when summer comes around when I want to do long rides again. They said my Dynamic Endurance was turned off so they turned it on and that should extend as I progress.

Not sure if that answers the question. In my mind I still want to train hard when I can but I think that is a trap a lot of us fall into so I am going to trust the process. I don’t think my 1.5 hr Saturday interval rides will turn into 2 hr rides on this program though.

Very good points. Thanks. It does feel weird to give up time, but I guess it is a good idea to step back and think about how can I progress from this level without doing even more time which is not going to happen without burnout. Start back up slightly lower and ramp it back up again.
