Metrics on new AI FTP Detection + TrainerRoad AI

Have you tried entering that number in your profile settings? It’s under Account → TSS Estimation (very bottom of the page) → Max cycling heart rate text box.

That’s only relevant for HR-based TSS Estimation in the absence of power data; not used for anything else, which I believe was confirmed here by TR in the past week.

Thankyou for showing me where this was. I did check and it is correct.

This post just earned an annual subscription from me. Thanks for all you and the team do.

Hey! @firemunki this is a display issue that we’ll work on fixing, but pretty much it seems specific to a small window sizes on the Windows/macOS apps.

If you expand the view, the dropdown buttons should appear.

Awesome! If it helps engineering my screen is in portrait orientation which probably is why not many folks spotted it.

Gonna be honest, I think it’s because it’s just tiresome to argue with the same 5 people over and over. They’re dug in, they’re going to keep digging and I just don’t care to try convince them anymore.

I’m loving the workouts I’m doing daily. This feels like the first time in my cycling life I’m getting appropriately hard workouts day in day out.

Yes. It sounds like about half of users got a decrease, which I think would mean that it’s prioritizing TIZ and TTE and wants to see higher level workouts.

Calculating TSS requires using an FTP value. Is the fatigue detection using whatever is set as FTP in my account or is it using what the AI has detected as my FTP? (Asking in the general case, right now I’m using the AI chosen FTP).

You can test be entering manual FTP and observing whether yellow days appear/disappear accordingly.

It probably doesn’t matter much because Fatigue is normally determined by comparing recent workload (ATL) with longer term workload (CTL) and both are TSS based.

TSS is FTP-based. That’s one of the big reasons why people have been worried about that AIFTP. It drags IF and TSS along with it.

Yes but CTL and ATL will be based on the same FTP so it cancels out

It will cancel out after the amount of data gathered with the new FTP becomes more prevalent. We’re currently in a transition period where most historical data may not be aligned with the current FTP

Agreed - for those that saw a significant FTP change.

Alright, first o/u with my manually lowered FTP.

AIFTP: 301w

Manual: 288w

I completed Tunemah, which is a level 5.2. 3x12m 2m overs/2m unders - for some reason TR did not recommend this…

This was a proper o/u, unlike the versions using the too high AIFTP value:

unders were 274w and overs were 302w.

Feedback: Even though the difficulty for some reason is rated ‘not recommended’ for high chance of failure, this workout felt exactly like it should have. The unders were just easy enough to recharge for the overs, and overs were not too high to get into my V02 and really spiral. I rated this a solid Hard.

I know this is only one workout, but definitely a better functional number compared to the AI version (for me anyway - your mileage my vary).

If folks are in a similar situation that I have experienced, where the ‘unders’ for these workouts are not ‘under’, I don’t see this AI number being optimally functional. You should experiment lowering your FTP to achieve the goal of the the workout.

Same feedback with a sample size of 1 based on manual FTP. My second o/u is tomorrow.

What I am most curious about is my next FTP detection value. Before I changed, my prediction was 252W (down from 258). My current value is 245W.

Based on how things are going, 252W sounds right. But we will see.

I’ll be monitoring mine for interest sake also. When I turn my detection on, mine still thinks it will be 310w up from the 301w now. I really like this hybrid approach. I’m getting better training, and can still take advantage of the AI functions when needed. The bonus is the AI prediction is off, so isn’t distracting me.

Other bonus items:

  • getting accurate TSS numbers again
  • Z2 rides are z2 again and not creeping in tempo
  • Higher workout levels and more time in zone

+1. My threshold today was also on point. Manual FTP of 353 instead of the AI’s 366. Rated hard but could’ve said very hard, too. Proper workout.

When I flash my prediction (accept and delete), I can see it getting lower as I train with my manual FTP. Started at 371, gradually decreased to 368, now it’s down to 365. It’s a reported decrease from the 366 it thinks I have, yet it’s still too high to train with. I’ll treat myself a 2-3 watt manual increase when the time comes
