So letās put this in perspectiveā¦framing it as 7% is kinda worthless since the effort needed to bridge that difference is substantial, but intuitively, 7% sounds reasonable.
Compared to Campanearts, Sanders came up 3.8km short, or 2.3 miles. If it had been a race to 55.08km )Campanearts distance), Sanders would still have had 2.3 miles to go when Campanearts crossed the line. In terms of time, that is 4ā27ā.
If someone loses a TT by 4ā27ā, not many people are saying āhe can beat that other guyāā¦heck, finishing that far down doesnāt even get you noticed on the results sheet.
For additional perspective, Sanders barely beat Jens Voight distance, who was a good, but not great TTāer. Voight was also at the tail end of his career and basically did the record to grab it before anyone else tried it. It was widely considered a āsoftā target and everyone knew it wouldnāt stand for long.
There is no way riding a better line, improving his track experience and aerodynamics get him 4ā27ā. He needs a massive boost in power to even sniff the record.
I think thereās more to it to be honest, they did say that the track he was on was one of the slowest. Not sure how much that would add but seeing how e everyone goes to altitude thereās a good chance it helps a lot. In terms of power, he stated that he never ride uci legal frame and he didnāt had much time on this one. So maybe his aero wouldnāt improve much, but potentially power he can hold in the new position would. So he can absolutely go faster, how much faster I donāt know, but I wouldnāt write him off that easily.
Not sure if anyone has actually watched Campenearts record but his line is only marginally better than Lionelās anyway. Judging by some of the comments here Victor could add another few km there no problem by tidying that up.
Oh sureā¦there is a TON more to it. I just reframed the situation into metrics that we could relate to. The claim was made that it was āonlyā 7%, which seems a reasonable jump. Again, our initial reaction to that measurement is ānot so bad,not even 10%ā
But when you lay out that 7% in the real-world metrics that the record is based on, you better understand the massive gulf between LSās ride and the record.
Think of it this wayā¦imagine trying to go ~2.5 mph faster than your best 40k TT time. That is a MASSIVE increase in performance. Now imagine trying to do it at over 50 kph.
The best thing is that people are talking about it! Possible or not, thereās no denying LS is is a positive force for cycling ā strava records, zwift wins, Hour records⦠Man loves to race!
Iām gonna check slowtwitch, see if the tri nerds think he could WR.
(edit: already 10 pages/260+ comments on it! )
Veal was on the same PanAm silver medal pursuit team as the kid I snatched a KOM fromā¦my personal version of getting an Hour Record. Hoping they build a few stop lights and speed bumps on that seg.
Has anyone here attempted a real life Hour ride?
(not on the trainer but full-on velodrome styles)
