Go for a run? The plan adapts

On the main page (trainerroad.com) there is a scrolling banner that highlights lots of features including:

Go for a run? The plan adapts

This sounded like a nice feature at signup. If I go for a run, I would like for my plan to consider this extra load and potentially re-schedule cycling workouts and/or reduce cycling workout intensities.

However, after signup I was digging into the details and found this on Sync and Analyze Your Runs in TrainerRoad

How is Run TSS measured in TrainerRoad?
Currently, Run TSS is only an estimated TSS based on RPE which athletes will need to manually enter post-workout. TSS based on Heart rate or Power is not in place at the moment. Run TSS is something we are closely monitoring though and actively discussing.

Are runs incorporated into Adaptive Training?
If you miss a run scheduled by your plan, Adaptive Training will adjust your upcoming runs in response. Adaptive Training does not currently analyze your running performance the way it does for your cycling workouts though and adaptations to your runs will not affect your scheduled cycling workouts.

This makes it sound like runs are not currently incorporated in any meaningful way. Can somebody explain this more clearly? If I go for a run, what will be impacted in TR?

I think the most current/relevant data would be found in the thread about all activity sync.

The main adaptation if you are not in a run/multisport type plan is going to be rl/gl. So it will use the info for fatigue monitoring. It isn’t going to change a PL of an upcoming sweet spot just because you ran unless it flags it yellow or red.

I think if they were smart they would use run heart rate data to factor in. The heart is a muscle and needs recovery as well. I went for an 8 mile run yesterday and I had over 60 minutes in my zone 4 (threshold) heart rate in a 5 zone model.

Hey there and welcome to the TR community!

Check out the link to the Activity Sync thread that @mrtopher1980 posted above – that will go over how runs are now incorporated with Red Light Green Light.

RLGL does not need a run TSS estimate to be entered in order for it to function. If you go for a run that will negatively impact your upcoming cycling workouts, your plan will adapt accordingly.

The second article quote you listed pertains to missing runs within a triathlon plan. If you miss a planned run in a triathlon plan, it will be pushed into the future so you don’t “skip” it (and thus maintain your running progression within the triathlon plan). Those pushed/future runs that aren’t yet completed will not impact your cycling workouts.

To reiterate, though, if you go on a run and upload it to TR, RLGL will analyze the run. If it’s deemed stressful enough to throw off your upcoming cycling workouts, AT will step in and propose adaptations for you.

Welcome to the forums :slightly_smiling_face:

If it’s a properly easy run you regularly do and ride the next day without being impacted it won’t change anything.

If it’s a harder run it might recommend your next bike is endurance only, and if its a proper hard run it’ll recommend a rest day.

I use non-specific terms because RLGL will look at what you actually do which isn’t always what we think we do.
