Garmin Virb Data Overlays

Yea I tend to like a minimal design. That’s why I really wanted to find the overlay from the Safa Brian videos. Just simple and clean.

The chesty mount should be pretty tight, about the same as your heart rate strap. Also, I sit on my bike with the chesty on, pull up the preview on the phone and adjust the camera to where I want it. Once it’s perfect, I tighten everything down and make a silver sharpie line across the connector. This way, I can just look down and make sure the line is aligned if the camera gets bumped.

If you use the max lens and the chesty mount you can crop and move in post. This is helpful to align the center and also adjust if it’s too high/low. I hate when I see my knees in the videos, so I just zoom in a bit and move the view up.

I hate wearing the chesty but I think it’s the best view. I don’t like watching videos where I can’t see the front of the bike (cockpit) in the shot. It doesn’t feel the same when it’s just a moving video without the bike.

My riding position is pretty tall on my gravel/endurance bike (giant revolt) so when I try to do aero hoods or drops my torso angle changes a lot. So one minute the horizon is close to the middle of the screen and the next almost all you can see is bike and road. I can adjust while I’m riding but it gets to be a hassle and I forget about it. Zooming in a little might work for me, I’ll see if I can borrow the lens mod from a friend at work.

Hi Jiffylush. Does this workaround still works? I tried this today but unsucessful unfortunately.

As far as I can tell Microsoft updated something that basically killed this. So I think it might be dead. Maybe if you have an older setup laying around you might be able to make it work but things aren’t looking too good for Virb these days.

I wish some company would buy virb, update it, sell it. It would make dozens of people happy.

I feel like the Youtube content creators that use the data could at least direct a lot of attention to the needs and the poor process now.

Unfortunately it seems like we are using free software made for a discontinued product instead of insisting that GoPro or Insta360 actually develop and support the software necessary to get results we want.

I understand that the new Insta360 Ace cameras have coming functionality to overlay stats on video. That would be a game changer for a lot of us.

Yeah, I’ve been using the Insta360 Ace Pro with Garmin data overlays lately.

Generally speaking, it works very smoothly. Not as much customization as VIRB, but gets the job mostly done. A few minor quirks still in formatting, for example nuances of how it displays running pace in some cases, but things I think they’ll sort out. Or that it’s only on mobile app for now.

I don’t know why GoPro hasn’t done it, Insta360’s solution is very good.

Looking forward to your complete review. Insta360 has been pushing out too many pseudo-reviews as part of their marketing campaign.

Bumping this thread… does anyone have a solution for Macs and Garmin Virb Edit? When trying to sync the Gmetrix to my ride file, the maps are blanked out completely. It looks like Microsoft has a solution with a registry edit, but I can’t seem to find a solution for Macs.
