I do have both and will post a pic when I get my 1040 solar in hand for you. I was supposed to have it already but bro forgot it at his house as I had it sent there since I am here on vacation.
My new Tactix 7 pro is awesome and love the nylon band. Have a F6X sapphire and nothing wrong but I wanted the solar, better gps, more battery and prefer the tactix look.
It was entirely my fault. The mount w/ support for the external battery pack, uses a lever instead of the quarter-twist. If you donât pull the lever all the way down until it fully clicks into place, it can slide up releasing the head-unit.
I was sort of wrong about the magnetic compass. The 1040 has it but so does the 530 (no 830 or 1030 plus to test)
I personally have an edge 305,705,810,1030, and now 1040. Everything before my 1040 didnât use a magnetic compass which got annoying at times but the 1040 has it. On the older devices orientation of the map used the direction of movement of the unit. It didnât care about the actual orientation of the device. Not saying its some huge feature but when your map is oriented wrong its easy to make mistakes
Was watching the @dcrainmaker video on some of the new features being rolled out to the Fenix 7 in new beta firmware. They are introducing a mode where the GPS will auto-adjust to the more accurate, but higher battery use, multi-band mode and then a less accurate, but better battery life, mode based on signal strength. This sounds really cool and hopefully something that comes to the 1040 down the road.
Mineâs just arrived at home, looking forward to getting out of the office now
I have been using an 810 since Christmas 2014 and the battery life is maybe 12-13 hours at this stage, plus the rubber on the on/off button has cracked so I am worried about water ingress.
Saw the battery life on the 1040 solar and decided to go for it, I am riding a 600k audax this weekend (and a 1500 in August), and I had been worrying about how to keep the Garmin charged up (as will require v long days in the saddleâŚ). Figure the 1040 will get through the 600k without needing any charging, and I might only need one proper charge during the <125 hours of the 1500, depending exactly on sun and my actual finish time.
Related Q - if I turn the device off and on during a long ride (for example, lunch, or during an audax, when I am napping for an hour or twoâŚ), does it keep the ride running? I know my 810 does keep the ride running, but I have always been wary about saving the ride if I have to charge the device etc⌠So I have always saved the rides separately then merged later using a fit file merger (if I have needed to charge the garmin mid ride).
When you want to stop, hit stop on the ride and then put the Garmin in sleep mode. When you want to go again then turn the Garmin on and just hit start. Donât click on save or discard when you hit the stop button⌠Pro tip is to then leave the Garmin in the sun whilst you have lunch and itâs sleeping so it charges up from the solar.
The battery life is stellar on these. Hopefully Garmin will migrate the SatIQ feature they just introduced on the multi band watches to increase that even further.
Ideal, thatâs basically how the 810 works but I havenât tried connecting it to a charger while switched off mid-ride.
Yeah itâs mainly the battery life that I am interested in. ~12-13hr is obviously fine for normal use, but when itâs a 2-5 day audax it will help not to have to worry about it.
First real ride this morning with 1040 solar. Sun not fully out so only 2 min extra back on 18 mile loop and registered avg solar intensity of 3% during ride but at least it is there.
Probably my favorite thing though is the bigger screen vs my 530 and even the touch screen is pretty awesome.
Now if I can get some strava segments to come up I would be happy. They show on the unit but no pop ups but more than likely it is because did not have any starred here as I only ride this one once a year while back.

Yes it should pop up for you once you star the segments. I rode with hubby over the weekend and we both have 1040s. He had a bunch of segments starred that I donât and his were popping up for him. He said the info on the segments is better than what showed on the 1030 so I need to get some segments starred so I can check it out.
