Blur Future Workouts

I need to plan my life! I can’t have a bunch of guessing what the workout will be. I try to do them outside and need to plan a route. Or I might be on the road. At any rate, on the name of our slowly eroding freedoms, let us decide!

I would be fine seeing something generic like “1 hour difficult threshold”, where duration, zone, and planned difficultly level are visible. I would want to know what specifically is coming up this week and into next week, but further out than that the workouts themselves are dependent on how I perform on this week’s training and they adapt anyway so placeholder workouts don’t mean much

My flywheel hasn’t even stopped spinning, and I’m already looking to see what kind of pain I’ll be enduring in the next workout. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I didn’t have the ability to immediately start stressing out about the next workout. In all honestly we kind of know what we are in for with the progressions of things and day of the week. I can’t decide, though, for my own mental health if I want to be oblivious to the next round of workouts, or if I want permission to go full speed with anxiety leading into the next sufferfest.

I definately need to see what is coming up to make plans on where, how and with whom I may be doing workouts, and to inform wife I may be useless on the following evenings/afternoons as necessary.

If it’s not an optional thing I’d pretty much cancel my plan immediately. At this point I’m basically just using TR for their calendar and FTP detection, but I barely trust the AI FTP detection anymore anyway so without the calendar I’m left with nothing.

I think most of the concerns here are based on my incomplete description of it. :frowning:

Nate and I clarified this in today’s podcast at this time stamp.

We don’t have any final designs to share at this point, but you will still be able to see what zone, what profile (ie: over unders/hard starts/on-offs/etc.), duration, and even estimated TSS.

You’ll also be able to see a thumbnail that represents the zone and profile of the workout, so you’ll still see a chart that looks like over-unders if you have an over-under workout scheduled that day.

The whole goal with this is to reduce confusion for athletes.

In some cases it’s assumed that every workout on their calendar for the next 6 months is the specifically ideal workout, and if anything changes, they did something wrong.

This still lets you know what you’ll be doing on any given day in the future, but doesn’t create unrealistic expectations.

Yeah I can see the logic since workouts 2-3 weeks out usually get changed. However, I would like to still see full details of the upcoming week. Most people on TR use TR for the very reason that we don’t have the bandwidth to deal with a coach and need to move workouts around without having a discussion about it. So if you can’t see what is planned at least for the full week ahead, it would be huge inconvenience.

You can still see what’s planned and move them around.

Really the only difference is you won’t see the workout name.

Won’t see the workout name until when? Will we only know on the current day? A day in advance? Two days? A week?

Personally, I don’t like the idea of what feels like catering to the ‘lowest common denominator’ (the person overwhelmed or confused by seeing the next few months of workouts), when that is not the case for everyone. I want to know all of the upcoming workouts in my plan, and can deal with the fact that they might change. Removing that functionality for everyone seems like overkill. Please consider making this ‘feature’ optional.

It’s not based on time. You’ll see your next workout.

The future workouts you currently see on your calendar right now, are not the workouts you will do, so looking ahead doesn’t help you know what workouts you will end up doing.

This does a much better job of informing you of what you’ll do on a given day without setting expectations inaccurately.

I appreciate the updated information! Seems like what is proposed wouldn’t be too bad and would still provide enough information to plan/rearrange workouts. However, I agree with others that this is a step backwards in functionality without any apparent benefit to most. It seems like if you are overwhelmed by future workouts you could just not look at your calendar.

I feel like a lot of people are missing the point.

This isn’t about hiding “useful information” or trying to protect anyone from being overwhelmed. It’s just the reality that future workouts, especially those a few weeks out, are almost guaranteed to change, particularly now that adaptive training is factoring in more and more context.

It’s kind of like looking at a weather forecast three weeks ahead. Sure, you can see it, but it’s probably going to be wrong, and that just causes confusion. No one says a weather app is catering to the “lowest common denominator” because it doesn’t show an exact hourly forecast that far out.

Same idea here. It’s about managing expectations, not limiting visibility.

@Jonathan Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like the purpose of the “blur/placeholder” is to generalize that which the custom plan builder was already doing with placeholder workout types. Anything that was more than 4 or 8 weeks out and is undetermined what the actual workout would be and need adaptive training to pick it will be held by a placeholder showing type, duration and TSS. Anything that has been actually picked, like say I decide to do a build up to mary austin in the last 2 weeks of June with workouts I’ve chosen for each day, they will be there and won’t be “blur/placeholder.” Likewise if I load my calendar up with training plans by not using plan builder all of those workouts will be visible. But if I use plan builder to aim for an event months away rather than having my plan beyond the next 4-8 weeks be filled up with the same 2 or 3 workouts of a certain type and duration it will instead do the roughly the same thing but with a more ambiguous heading.

Historically, I see very little change/adaptation within the course of a week in the current system. Maybe others see different. I’d prefer to see my specific wattage and durations for Tues/Thurs intervals so that I can decide which workout better fits outdoors and plan my week accordingly. It sounds like this will no longer be the case. I guess I can work around it by planning the specific workouts on my own at the start of the week. Not a huge deal and I frequently use alternates anyway to fit better outdoors, it just feels like it would be better for TR to provide the details of the coming week with the understanding that it’s subject to change. Maybe my use case is unique with planning my weeks based on details of the workouts, but I think there is an emotional aspect that comes into play here as well. Maybe some people don’t want to know what’s coming, but I personally like to see the watts and minutes I’ll need to do later in the week, might motivate me to get that little bit more rest or fuel a little better leading up. In my opinion, only allowing someone to see the details of the next workout is a poor decision decision, but again it’s just my opinion based on my limited perspective.

I think what you mean is that the workouts we see now might not be the workouts we end up doing. Other than a single adaptation I had due to changing an outdoor ride to an indoor workout (due to weather; and it was ONLY that specific day that had an adaptation), I don’t think I’ve had any adaptations in over a week, possibly even two weeks. So, it would seem that the workouts I see on my calendar now might well be the workouts I end up doing, and I (and I think others) get some sort of ‘joy’ from (or at least are interested in) seeing them.

If my workouts were changing more regularly I might think differently, but that just doesn’t seem to be the case. I think the last real change I had was when I used the ‘Check Training Load’ function after it was announced. And I’m guessing I won’t see any other meaningful adaptations until my next AI FTP update, which isn’t for nearly 2 weeks.

So, while I understand what you’re wanting to do, I’m just wanting to make it clear that this is not something everyone will want, so having the option to turn it off or on would be nice.

It has been mentioned on the podcast that the goal is to give the “perfect workout” on the day. I can’t remember who it was but they mentioned doing away with PLs as well. If this is the goal blurring future workouts would make sense. While you may have a threshold workouts lined up in two weeks the specific workout is yet to be determined on how the current week’s training goes.

In a way this is inching to in person coaching. You have a workout on the calendar but maybe over extended themselves the day before and need to tone it down… or maybe easier workouts have been feeling harder and need a shorter workout. Maybe they took an unscheduled day off (because life) and can do a bit more in the workout. It is nice to have an idea of what is coming up that week, and it can calm some training anxiety… but I see the rationale if this is where they are going.
