It’s at 6000ft so altitude adjusted assuming he is acclimated is equivalent to like 380 at sea level. Power is harder to put out given your more aggressive aero position (relative to a road bike) so he’s also lower than would be his ftp w (assuming it’s quoted on a road bike).
Does anyone genuinely think he’s capable of this? Objectively he’s a good TT’er but not world class.
He’s held it before so it’s not entirely implausible.
He’s got a good grasp on being as slippery as he can as well and looks like it’s properly planned too.
I think it is going to be a huge stretch for him…he needs to go +2.1kph faster than his previous record. Going to altitude will help, but that is a big gap to close.
I listened to an interview with Joss Lowden earlier. She said, to the effect of, that you only actually ride to break the record not to go as far as possible. Perfectly concievable that he could have gone further last time round. Not saying he will do it but I wouldn’t be too quick to judge it based on previous attempt
they are talking about 340w at altitude to be the magic number to get the record. There seems to be a LOT of aero optimization going into this to achieve that “low” of a power profile.
It sounded like wiggins had targetted around 440w when he set his record.
Dan Bigham has debunked this more or less, from his modelling it would have been closer to 420-425W I believe (which still is an impressive number to hold for an hour on the track).
I saw this, seems a very low number (for a pro) to get the record.
The Campenaerts record was said to be done on about 330W. Altitude makes a huge difference to both the power you can hold and the air resistance you have to push through. The velodrome they use is at about 1800m, I think that’s something like a 10% drop in FTP. So 340W would equate to more like 380W at sea level. Still seems a bit low for a pro, would guess Dowsett is >400W on his road bike, so I suppose the rest is trading watts for a more aero position.
Dowset said his ftp is 415 at sea level. He mentioned this on a recent vlog
Yep, I think he has a good chance, he has said a few times that for the last record his/Movistars goal was to break it, not go as far as possible. According to him he was not anywhere near what he could have held for the hour so if that is true, and if all the optimization they have done gets him a bit slipperier he should be able to push a bit further than Campenaerts.
He seems to have done a good deal of homework to give best possible chance of breaking it. Should be good, hopefully it’s live streamed somewhere.
on his youtube channel
Bike is up on YouTube, looks super pimp!
I believe that’ll be 6pm east coast time in US.
Yup…hoping he rolls off at the top of the hour. End of the work day and I kinda need to go home.
Haha, I’m on the trainer but I don’t know if the hour record will be entertaining or not. The last one I watched was Jens Voigt and I was in and out of the coverage
His arms appear to have been shaved!
