A Time Trialing Thread

wauw big player!

I have a question about upgrades (who doesn’t love some good upgrades when it comes to TT bikes). I have seen several people upgrading their bars and cockpit areas with Aerocoach, WattShop, and other set ups. I have a 2nd generation Trek Speed Concept and am thinking about upgrading it to something like I mentioned above.
I am not seeing a ton of detail out there but has anyone upgraded their setup (especially interested in a Speed Concept) to WattShop or something else? What have been your thoughts on it? Was it worth it compared to previous setup? Do you feel more comfortable with it?

I confess that I really didn’t expect result, for me third it was already a dream to in on the podium.

at the time of the video it was raining, but not so hard, on the way back it started to rain very, very hard, I can’t upload the video, but I have a print.

I previously had the aerocoach, and now the wattshop, in terms of aerodynamics no tested compare because I changed the frameset too.

in terms of comfort I have preferred the wattshop, and in terms of regulation too, anemoi you loosen the screw and adjust it, as for the aerocoach for each inclination you have to buy a different adapter, which it was very bad and expensive, besides the more that the anemoi you can change the handgrips.

I’d go Titan until the wind increases to the point that it really messes with your ability to put out power. I’ve seen the Titan appear on enough riders (Remco, Wout, Pog, etc.) with access to testing to feel pretty confident about that choice. I’ve also inferred, from the testing posted on the Revolver site, that the Titan is faster than the Troika TMD. You can see that their 100mm wheel is faster than the Troika TMD up until like 15 degrees (TMD is marginally faster than the original version at 45kph).

What’s up with tires puncturing on the Titan? The first two latex tubes I put in popped before I had a chance to ride them. The 3rd has fortunately held for the past month.

I’d reach out to Aerocoach about the drag difference between tires and different widths. Revolver was really helpful about providing that info and I’m sure Aerocoach would be as well. FWIW, 23 and 25 were a dead heat on the Troika when Revolver tested them. There is an old Silca post that highlights the difference between 23 and 25. It’s pretty significant between 5-10 deg.

I currently have a Cervelo P Series and previously had Aerocoach extensions on them. I found my Tririg pads scoops to be more comfortable without sacrificing any drag. I tested the two at 0 degrees and the scoops were faster, but I’m guessing that was more down to not being able to match the position exactly.

I previously had the same speed concept and used the Revolver Blackbird Mono pads. It might not look as good but it was the most comfortable setup I’ve ever had on a TT bike. I think I had the 10 degree pads with the stock ski bends. The combo forced me to slightly drop my hands, which made it much easier to shrug.

Assuming you’re talking about this chart on the Revolver site?

.207 vs .205 at 0 yaw is a < 1% difference and then at > 5 degrees the TMD is faster , so I’m not sure that I’d decide to purchase a Titan based on that data alone. Yet…here I am contemplating pulling the trigger on one :joy:

Yep, that’s the one. My typical yaw is in the 0-5 degree range, so it was an easy choice for me. I’m also guessing the difference is a little greater at 50kph.

Thanks for the info here. So you put Revolver Blackbird Mono pads on your Speed Concept but did you ever try the TriRig scoops on that? Would you happen to have a picture of what your setup looked like when you had your Speed Concept? I am struggling to find pictures of different setups on the SC.
Thanks!

Did you have to experiment a lot to figure out how much of a shim to use? I can quickly align the brakes on my training wheels, but I’m about to head back to a shop to get them to align them for my Titans with an Ultegra rotor.

I usually install the rotor and put the wheel in the bike then to see if it scraps and if, how big of a gap there is to the outside brake pad (because you can just align towards the outside). For the Titan wheel it was quite significant, so I went with 0.3mm at first (means remove the brake disc, install a 0.1 and 0.2mm spacer and install everything again). That still did scratch, so I just added another 0.2mm shim and now its perfectly centered.
I think publicly available are only 0.25mm shims, but those are usually OK.

Good to see the data between 2 companies show different results :man_facepalming:
Specifically looking at the Hed Jet 9 vs ENVE 7.8

You’re right . Basically invalidates both tests unless we get another third party to confirm one of them

I really wish that Aerocoach put cda in the y-axis on their chart so you could at least see how the values they tested compare. That’s been a complaint of mine for years.

Last Sunday I participated in the local state championship and got a fourth place in my race category (second division in the dynamic German ranking system) and 3rd place in the state champs as the 3rd place didnt have a local racing license. It was a little messed up as the state champs usually should not depend on the division / category you are racing in, as there should only be one TT champ…but thats another story.
I am quite happy with my result, I could improve my time on the same course, comparable conditions by 45s (–> 15.6km in 20:01min at 314W and 46.7km/h) compared to last year.
Position felt good, the attached picture was close to the finish where I was running up on another guy so I looked up (or at least I tell that to myself  )

On Sunday I have another 40km TT. Not too sure how I should approach that. I will need a bottle, I think? Power wise I will still aim for 310W for the start as I should be able to sustain that, in theory. If not…guess I will blow up. Its not an A race for me, its from the BMW cycling club on their test track.

I plan on doing some club 10 RB TT’s, I have a SS suit, long show covers, deep (80mm) wheels with GP5K tubeless, that’s my normal RR setup bar the covers. I’m undecided on helmets…

I have an HJC Adwatt and I can ride in the road position (either aero hoods or on drops with bent arms - same back angle) and feel the Adwatt tail between my shoulders; is it worth it (heat/goofiness) vs an aero road lid like the Utopia or Met Manta?

If the position of the head and upper body is comparable, I strongly guess the TT helmet would be faster. And on a club 10 the chance of overheating is also very little (except you have like 35C in the UK now?).

No! Thankfully we are cool at the moment. This week is ~20C max, and pretty dreary… usual UK summer

I can get the TT helmet rotated pretty far back on my head so it is touching my back, and that helps being able to see up the road. The Adwatt does have very good visibility in that respect anyway and rotating it back give an even clearer view.

I’ll give it a go, and hope my triceps hold out for 20-something minutes.

Congrats on the great result and speed!

You shouldn’t…start well hydrated and take a gel right before you start.

If it is hot, however, you may want a bottle.
