A Time Trialing Thread

I’d bring a bottle, stick it on, and see it you need it.
For something like an Elite Crono, you’ll throw out 2 Watts ish. You gain the ability to have a sip and, more importantly, freedom of mind.
I did a 50k TT a couple weeks back, and although I trained for not having to drink, I still out a bottle on. Gave me peace of mind and probably cost me 5 seconds at worst.

I have an SC and upgraded to the Aerocoach bars. It is definitely more comfortable and I can now get my hands higher. I am definitely glad I upgraded.

As far as drawbacks, I immediately got rid of their pads and replaced them with pads from CeeGees. I also cut the sides off the pads as my forearms kept getting stuck on the pad while getting in and out of the extensions. Lastly, the 3d printed Garmin mount I received is terrible (not sure if this is just mine or the mounts in general). The best way to describe it is that the grove that was 3d printed is too deep, so if I bump my head unit it will twist and potentially come off if I hit it hard enough.

Glad to hear you like them. I also have an SC and was thinking about getting them. Can you post pics from the Garmin mount issue you are talking about. And maybe pads too. Thanks.

I don’t use a bottle on a 25miler (circa 40km), whilst I do have an aero bottle on my bike, its for pre race hydration and not in race but I’m in the UK and I think 29deg C average has been the hottest I raced a 25 in. I do carry fluid on a 50 miler (circa 80km) but that’s a soft water bladder (camelbak copy) shoved down the front of my skin suit. That’s preferable to me than fiddling with a bottle and perhaps dropping it.

As the course is flat-flat I guess I will do like you and Power13 wrote. Hydrate well, take the last gel right before the start, but bring a bottle for peace of mind. I just checked back again to my first velodrome test in 2021 and we compared the Elite aero bottle to no bottle on my Shiv TT Disc and the difference was 1.5W at 45km/h. I doubt that will be the winning or losing margin on that event.

Looks like the new Corsa Pro Speed is plenty fast. Vingegaard just pulled of the best time trial in history on them :rofl:

Even if those tires had a Crr of 0.00, I still find the performance … hard to fathom… you know.
Regarding his kit. As a P5 rider myself, I was interested in the cockpit myself.
It’s definitely cleaner than other aftermarket solutions, but it completely baffles me, that is one fixed piece, with no adjustment possible. How is it ever going to work for every rider? How did they come to decide that this super low angle for the hands was the fastest? Really weird stuff:

The design is quite clever with the crossbar below the computer mount to smoothen the airflow even more in that area. And as the split to the two arm pieces occurs just right below the armpads that does not count (I guess) as a crossbar, therefore they can have one further up the arms.

And as it states “developed for Jumbo Visma riders” maybe they just really developed it for him and Roglic?

Yeah, possibly, they have zero intentions of selling it, and offer it just to comply with the UCI.


While the solutions are smart, it having zero adjustment, no version with raised hands, and really not making anything of the newer, more relaxed UCI regulation, makes them useless for many people I‘d imagine.

So a photo won’t do justice for the mount issue. However, I found this interesting when looking at escape collective’s gallery of the TT tech. IPT runs the aerocoach bars and mount and it appears that they have the same issue too. It looks like there solution is to put some tape inside the mount to lessen the depth.

I’m in the market for my first TT bike and am eyeing either buying a full, used bike or getting a new frame set and building up with components as I go.

While one can find some actual tests / comparisons of different gear (wheels, helmets, skin suits etc.), I haven’t been able to actually find reviews / comparisons of frames that aren’t just copy & paste from the manufacturer on the awesome innovations they put into the frame. Is it accepted at this point in time that most frames are equal enough in aero performance and one should purely optimize for the position it allows me to get into?
Would love to hear if people have data points on different bikes here, feels only right to chase marginal gains from the start :slight_smile:

I agree the lack of adjustability is a bit of a bummer.

The low hands might not even the fastest for Vingegaard but definitely could improve the handling. Looking how he took the corners in the aerobars at speeds upwards of 80kph this might have been the reasoning.

a question how did you get the sworks tt5 helmet, I’m behind and I couldn’t find it anywhere, I opted to buy a kask mistral large to test against my tempor.

There isn’t yet. It’s announced for 2024, Pro Teams get to ride it already though. It’s based on the Corsa Pro.

I have the issue that overshoes slip down on me, even when I used this “skin-glue” stuff. I have not tried taping them as someone here mentioned, yet. But I got pretty good results with socks compared to aero overshoes, too, maybe the Giro empire shoes are also quite aerodynamic?

Regarding the SWorks TT5 helmet:
I bought the last one in a size M that was available in Germany (or maybe EU, not sure?) in the Specialized concept store in Hamburg…or rather introduced my supervisor at work who was in Hamburg to visit a customer that he has to get me that helmet :sweat_smile:

I wear compression socks underneath my overcovers and that seams to hold them up OK but I also cycle with closed toe vents as I now suffer from poor circulation/ cold feet post chemo 4 years ago. Long Socks and overshoes may be too warm for some folks and they’ll lose more than the say 1w gained aero (I’ve no idea what watts are actually saved but I can’t see it being much) in overheating.

Recap of the 40k TT

  • no pictures sadly as it was on an automobile test-track. I would have loved for some in position pictures as the course was perfect for tucking in your shoulders and getting the head low.
  • the bottle was nice for peace of mind, but I didnt take a sip during the race (just like you all told me :smiley: )
  • we had a mild south-west wind so the main-straight was side-tailwind and I could reach 50km/h for most of it while holding back a little, the back-straight was side-headwind and a little rougher road surface, therefore I tried to invest more power there to hold some speed. Or so was the plan I formed while warming up and during my first lap.
  • Above plan did not work out really good, I found myself pushing a little in the tailwind as it was very satisfying to see speeds starting with a 5 on my headunit.
  • I wanted to aim for 310W, but especially during the middle of the race I settled down to 300W.
  • I have sore muscles now… Pushing in position nonstop for 50min is different than your average 20min TT where you sit up for a corner or U-turn every now and then…
  • Got 1st place, but as it is an event only for club members the big local hitters didnt attend. 14s missing to the course record. Guess I got a goal for next year.

One question to the UK folks:
The distance is comparable with your 25m TTs, where would I sit with my speed / time in your very competitive TT scene? The complete ride was 40.5km / 25.X miles and was a 51:12.
EDIT: I remembered Oliver Bridgewood had a “Sub 50” challenge in his cycling weekly days for a 25mile TT. Thats at least some comparison for me now.
