I discovered Exposure make an aero extension mount for their helmet lights - Sirius, Switch, Joystick, etc. I bought one and its worked well (assuming you have round extension poles). The lights are small, but put out upwards of 200 lumen for a few hours, and the burn time/output is adjustable.

Seeking help for my wife! Michelle Howe:

She took 5th at US Pro Nationals in the TT this year.

I completely guessed on a bike fit with zero testing. Just measured/eyeballed to UCI standards and took it to the jig on the morning of the TT to make final adjustments so that it passed UCI. The setup was at every limit imaginable. 10cm pad to aero bar height difference. 5cm saddle setback. 80cm aero bars to BB.

Worked out as well as imaginable. Definitely open to insight for improvement here. I may pull the trigger on a new bike for her if she’s not offered something for next year.

She’s now prepping for 24hr TT World Champs in October, as well as her first pro triathlon. 70.3 at Oceanside.

Neither require UCI legality. I’ve moved her saddle forward a bunch and bar extensions forward a bunch. I plan to move her elbows up maybe ~1-2cm and her hands up 3-4cm.

What else? Open to all input!

What do we do for lights at night?

We ran different tires that had the same spacing to frame. Double-bottle setup is gone, obviously. Was just trying it for training but didn’t work because of leg-rub.

Kills me that I didn’t electrical tape those pad screw holes!!

I don’t think taping the screw holes makes much difference, but I agree, nice to know it’s done.

I think a front end that you can play with stack height without having to run upside down stems. That might then allow running a between the arms bottle system. Aero bottle on the frame, often useful just to fill in the gap, and them some bottles behind the saddle?

The P5 was designed with a mannequin in the UCI position (as opposed to a trek, Ironman mannequin) so if you can test, it might be faster to run the position a bit further back.

I’m jealous of anyone that can get that stretched and stay within the regs.

Speed play Aero pedals supposedly save 5W

She looks very good already. My only critiques would be trying to close the void between the leading edge of the helmet and the hands. I assume you cured that with the non-uci legal setup.

I also concur about taping the holes and cleaning up the loose ends. Overall she has arguably the fastest possible setup.

My personal experience with the Tempor is mixed. I look fast with it but IRL it’s not working. The fitment is hard to maintain on longer races and the times are slower compared to my other options. Have you tested the tempor vs other options?

:beers:

I would definitely run a BTA water bottle. Studies have indicated that it is actually an aero gain by itself, let alone the better access to hydration. I personally prefer a regular cage and WB between my arms, but if you can get something like the Torhans Aero 30 system to snug right up against the head tube, it is a very fast system.

Nice job on her position…a great example how you don’t always have to go lower with your HB in order to lower the upper body. Extending 9and raising) the reach can accomplish the same thing.

What does this mean?

Definitely considering this. She loves feeling LOCKED to the pedals, so those are Look Keo Blade with the 20Nm blades. Is that tightness possible with Speedplay??

Have done zero testing. Time is a bit short! We’re privateers through and through and she’s competing in everything from supersprint tri to 70.3, cycling stage races, crits, and TT’s, and now XC MTB. Goal: drink through the firehose and learn skills fast. Then specialize if she wants. Anyway, looking for low-hanging fruit here until we get a bit more financial support which might free up some of my time.

Googling Torhans Aero 30!

Is that Torhans 30 supposedly faster than some of the Profile Designs ones?

Any suggestions for bottles on the down tube?

The bike is optimised for a UCI position. Most bike development is done with a mannequin of a sponsored rider. Let’s say cancellara, 3D scan him in a TT position, then optimise the frame for that rider with CFD / wind tunnel testing.

What does it mean for you? It might be a bit faster to ride with the saddle further back, and tend toward a UCI position. You’d need to test it though… obviously you’re having to balance running off of that position - and that’s where I no longer have any idea!

Re: tyres - good savings to be had there what you running on race day? GP5000 is a good compromise tyre, though there are faster and lighter ones available.

Dunno about the speed plays, it’s a change I need to make at some point too.

Élite chrono CX.

OH! I thought certainly you couldn’t be using the word mannequin to mean that. Had no idea that was standard practice. I understand it all now. I had thought mannequin must have been some bike tech / component word/slang I wasn’t familiar with. :joy:

She ran Corsa Speed G+ 2.0 with Silca Latex tubes on US Pro TT. She will probably run GP 5000 with latex for the 24-hr. Maybe Corsa Speed G+ 2.0. I just need to chat with her and see what road conditions are looking like. Corsa Speeds have been fine at avoiding pinch flats but seem to be like magnets for sharp debris compared to the GP 5000s.

Anyone here reading know much about the cleat engagement tightness possible with Speedplay vs. Look Keo Blade 20Nm?

Very helpful! D2Z has a few interesting products, actually… Thank you!

I bought 2xExposure aero extension light mounts, and I had 4xExposure Sirius lights for my 24h TT (two lights on the bike, two as spares). I set the lights up just below the bars/in front of the elbow pads. I ran two lights simultaneously, but I turned one on well before the other - the hope being that they wouldn’t both fail on the same lap! I did have to accept that I would stop and change them at ~2am (hence 4 lights).
I also zip-tied a 5000mAh power bank and charging cable between the aero extensions to power my Garmin, and gave me the option to recharge the lights if needed.

Has any of you guys ever seen a independent comparison of aerodynamics on current TT frames?
With all the current gen UCI legal frames, from an eye test, the Cervelo P5 disc looks very fast. But I have yet to see anyone testing these indecently.

Otherwise it will be very difficult to really see if the 2022 gen of bikes (new UCI rules) really are faster…

Just curious.

I do know someone who tested the Shiv TT disc vs the P5 disc and he mentioned the P5 was 5-7w faster than the Shiv TT, but I never saw any actual data. I don’t think anyone has actually published any test results, but I’m sure it’s been done.

Wouldn’t be super surprised if TT bikes were just too niche for this.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Shiv TT was slower than the P5. The Shiv TT is basically a venge TT bike, rides and corners like a dream, super light and nimble.
That costs a few watts of top end speed.

Yup, that’s basically what he was telling me…Shiv TT is nimble and better suited for technical TTs, but the P5 is faster on flat, straight line TTs.

Couple new skinsuits released in the past day or two. It’d be interesting to see some independent test data on them. 3.1% over NoPinz is a pretty significant claim.

Jackroo really isn’t specific here. Is it the NoPinz Flowsuit or another suit?
The fit of the suit in the pictures is pretty bad, loads of wrinkles and bunching up. Makes the whole thing a little dubious.

The wing suit is definitely a funny concept. Not UCI legal of course, so no real application

Except everyone riding in non-UCI races.

Yep, so probably GB :uk: focused. In most other European countries and as far as I know in the US, too, if you racing with a license, you need to comply by UCI rules. Which in Germany means every race but the very small local races.

Don’t know if one wants to be the guy who comes to the Wednesday night club TT in an UCI illegal wingsuit looking like this:
