I dropped TP for Intervals.icu. I’m super happy with it and have been using it for all my planning and analysis. Which reminds me, I need to go update my plan!
I’ve just written a blog post about this. Prompted by the recent changes to the Strava pricing model my previous views posted here have changed a little.
For me I think it’s time to ditch Training Peaks, start paying for Strava and go all in on TrainerRoad and Intervals.icu.
Al.
Oddly enough I changed my position in February, started using a training plan purchased on TP, and paid for TP premium annual subscription again. I’m using WKO and while it works great with free TP account, I wanted to use TP mobile app and move workouts around. Very happy with the current setup, best in class analysis tools and quick analysis on mobile is better than intervals or TR. Looking forward to TR mobile update, and next year hoping to not renew TP and just use tp free + WKO + TR.
I’m in a similar situation. I dropped TP premium but I’m planning on signing back up.
It’s really the simplicity of the reports and the iOS app functionality that I miss. I’m very impressed with intervals.icu but it’s not nearly as useful on a daily basis and I’m not looking to nerd out over every new random metric that users can come up with. It already feels more of a mess than a few months ago when I started on it.
I truly applaud David for what he’s built and the work he does for users, but the product just isn’t for me. Judging by the forum, I’m not the target demographic anyway.
I feel the same way about intervals and David.
Tx. Is an ongoing battle to keep improving the s/w without adding too much complexity. Trying to keep the extras in “Options” and “off by default” now. I added all the new charting stuff to be able to quickly figure out what is worth looking at in the data and to handle simple but useful requests like “total TSS per week” etc…
Unfortunately there won’t be an IOS or Android app any time soon. Thats a lot of work better spent improving the more general web app. I am going to make it work better on small screens at some point.
I’ll keep checking in on your progress. As I mentioned, it really is impressive what you’ve built and your commitment to the users.
The other big problem with Strava (which is why I cancelled my paid subscription a year or so ago) is that there is no support to manually input or change your TSS for a workout. It was on their development path something like 5 years ago and I think it’s still a feature they’re working on last I saw. It’s fine for keeping a basic workout log, but more advanced metrics and all of a sudden you have to go to all the different plugins like Elevate, intervals.icu, etc. That’s why I’m just sticking with TP as it’s a one-stop-shop for all my data.
For an update, this was apparently changed recently, as part of the revamp of the service:
For WKO5 users, does TP (free) allow the streamlined creation of iLevel-based workouts yet?
When those workouts can then be pushed to a head unit like a Garmin or Wahoo, it will be happy days indeed.
Nope. Either % FTP, % HR Max, % LTHR, % Threshold Speed or RPE.
I used to use Training Peaks when I was with a coach (I only had the free version though, he paid for the pro version to see all his athletes). I get enough out of Strava, TR and GC so whilst TP still syncs now I’m not with a coach I don’t really bother about it and certainly wouldn’t pay for it.
I’m down to paying for TrainingPeaks, Strava, and VeloViewer subscriptions. WKO5 was a one-time purchase. Happy with that combo. TP web app’s UI could use a face lift. I could get by with TP free, but like using the mobile app (it could also use a UI face lift). Function over form.
I dropped TrainingPeaks many months ago, but to be honest it really is the only good calendar/planning app for triathlon. I am using a combination of Garmin Connect (main training log), Xert (monitor training loads & progress with bike and run power) and Wahoo SYSTM (strength/mobility). I still have an active yearly subscription with TR but haven’t really used it in a while. If TR can get their multisport calendar out the door before my sub expires I may keep it. I have way too many subscriptions and need to simplify my workflow.
I’m trying to repurpose this topic. I bought a plan from a coach on TP.
I can’t really find any good way to view the plan’s workouts. It seems that I have to first put them on the calendar so I can look at the individual workouts. It’s hard to believe that this is the only way to view the details of a plan.
There are 12 workouts plus some tests. It’s supposed to be 2 workouts per week but I ended up with all 12 workouts put on the calendar sequentially.
If I try to move a workout to another day, I get the pop-up for TP premium. I already have WKO5 so I have zero need to TP Premium.
Am I missing something obvious? Is there no other way to view a purchased plan? Or put it on the calendar in a normal progression without having to pay?
Thanks!
Try putting it on the calendar in the future (I’ve got TP premium). My habit is to drop plans on Monday, March 3, 2025. Then it is off the immediate radar if it happens to sync to WKO. When done auditing, I remove the plan.
Thanks. I guess it’s not my imagination that this cumbersome system is the way it is.
I assume that the calendar is severely crippled without paying. It seems strange that I can’t put two workouts per week on the calendar as the workout designer intended.
You have to apply the plan to the calendar in order to view it. That is suppose to work with both free and premium TP. One big difference is that with free you can only make changes to the current day (and tomorrow?). Not sure, its been awhile since I used free version.
In any case, here is the FasCat meal plan:
It clearly shows that the plan is 4 Weeks, and has been applied to the calendar from 3/3/2025 to 4/1/2025. Last time I had free, back in 2019 (?), it worked the same way as premium. In case you look at a calendar and say “4 weeks ends on March 30th” its because the plan includes 2 days in the 5th week:
Not sure I understand what happened on your computer.
This plan is 12 workouts with some pre and post test workouts. They just get populated day after day based on the start date.
It seems that I can’t move or change the date of any workout on the free tier.
I did remove the plan and then replace it further up the calendar. It would be nice to get the right workout on the right day so that it sync’d with WKO5 but otherwise, it’s no big deal.
I figured out a hack for the TP calendar. They block drag and drop but they don’t block copy paste.
So, I could put the plan in the future and then copy/paste individual workouts on to the correct day. Not that I even need the calendar or the workout on the correct day…
