A year or so my wife and child went back to visit her family for a week without me. I couldn’t believe how much more time and energy I had. I was putting in huge rides, runs, and swims and would wake up the next morning ready to go again. I put in 20+ hours that week and felt great
Also, contrary to popular belief, I spend less money now post children. I’m too tired to go out shopping or ‘out on the town.’ Travel less (or at least closer by) since it’s a bit more work. And I’m not tempted by new bikes and gear since I’m not riding the stuff as much as I used to.
But don’t let that scare anyone away from kids. I’ve won lots of races and have a bunch of KOM’s, but nothing brings me more joy than coming home and having my little girl run up to me really excited and give me a big hug and tell me how happy she is to see me and tell me about her day
I raised a border collie. Pretty much the same thing
And another little one. Those also need attention from time to time.
To be fair @Nate_Pearson has been super-up front about his relationship changes and @Jonathan had a baby!
I for one feel guilty enough about how inconsistent my training has been over the past year and I don’t always feel like I represent TrainerRoad (or myself) all that well without that amount of personal disruption.
Grateful they’re still pooping in as an independent company and bringing so many new features and podcasts to the sports we all love.
I
bikes so much! I put in a ton of training for Nationals and Cape Epic last year and put myself in time debt with family, house projects, and just “me” time. So while I still trained and raced plenty last year, it was not the volume of previous years. Doesn’t mean I love the sport any less, it’s just the natural ebb and flow of life.

Tri training has been hugely beneficial for my general health. I’m stronger, more capable, and more durable than ever before while retaining about 95% of my cycling performance. Also, tri training does not mean I like cycling less. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I really enjoy it!
Chad is riding regularly these days, but don’t expect him to upload to Strava. That’s not what motivates Chad to ride, and if anything, that sort of social accountability/interaction can be demotivating for him. But Chad’s as in love with cycling as he’s ever been (our nearly daily convos on pro racing are as passionate and opinionated as ever
).
As Nate’s mentioned, he’s taken a break from training and racing as he focuses on doing what’s best for him as he navigates a transitional period in his personal life. That said, he’s just as connected and focused on TR as he’s ever been.

I don’t think you’re alone in feeling that guilt, and I think we should normalize training volumes of all forms. Life always evolves, and our training should too. It’s okay to train more or less – it all depends on the cards we’re dealt.

Wait, is this a newborn joke? ![]()

Haha!
I’m kidding. I too have found great enjoyment in running (oddly). Just fun to give a bit of a razz over the changes. Keep on keeping on!

I love your razzing. Wouldn’t be the forum without it!

The last time I used TR it didn’t smell that bad…
Just fun to give a bit of a razz over the changes.
I thought your posts were always serious like mine. They aren’t? :-o
I just get the feeling that all 3 (chad, nate, Jonathan) have lost their focus/interest in cycling and have moved on to other things.
Sometimes it’s easier to keep your job and your passions separate. Probably healthier for the mind and body as well. Cycling is an all consuming and unforgiving sport. I can’t think of anything else where taking a few weeks/months off is going to seriously hamper your results.
Daniel Craig is out of the way now so…

It’s Pearson, Nate; Nate Pearson.
I would add that the Trainerroad Insta hasn’t posted a new post since May. I remember in one of my innovation and leadership courses, they gave the example of the impression left by a doctor’s office that has old magazines from the previous 3 years and how it gave off the whiff of stagnation - opposite of innovation. The lack of posts, to me, might not inspire people to engage. When I’m deciding who to follow, if they haven’t posted in months, I don’t bother following. I consider it a bonus when Jon and Nate post in this forum due to their wealth of info, but y’all are what I come here for, even though I hardly ever post. *edited due to repetitious use of ‘impression’.
I think the new wave of engagement on IG is stories and reels. The TR account does post a fair amount of stories daily.
Assuming that was probably tongue in cheek, but FB/IG is trying to compete with TikTok…albeit it probably unsuccessfully.

Nah just rogue autocorrect yet again. Was trying to make a semi serious point but my phone had other ideas…
