Verstegg. I wanted something more challenging than Carillon, which was what was scheduled, so sorted all the 1 hr workouts from highest kJs to lowest, and picked one that looked ‘fun’. It was my first 900kcal hour long workout, and I beat my previous 20’ power by 10 watts! (I did it yesterday, but not like that matters)
Took my session out side today (Carter). Looks like on the bumps I went out of zone (I only had average target power on the screen). I’m tempted to extend my lunch hour and take tomorrows session outdoors too (Stromlo+4), its again forecast sunny and light wind but I might just do the shorter Carter again and the more intense Stromlo at night. ERG is interfering with the power meter. TR support reckons it could be the WiFi. There’s no change to my wifi set up (only the new powermatch) but maybe the cooler conditions make signals weaker (it was 13degC min yesterday and it was 15-18degC min when it was working pre power match). I’ll try switching the router of to see if it makes a difference or at least rule it out.

Think I’ve found the FTP that works for me, felt some cramps, near the end and having to use the interval rest at the end, this was required to complete. Did workout whilst climbing ADZ, miss calculated, still had one interval to go and was approaching bend 1, knew I’d struggle going down hill hitting targets, so a quick U turn and back down to turn 5… just a little out on reaching summit as interval ended, so extended an extra 30s+ switching to resistance with final over.
Didn’t go ultra deep and end up not wanting to do the next workout, plenty of burn experinced, will stick at this level for a while and enjoy the sessions.
Four hours fasted gravel ride at high Z2. It was easy in the beginning, but not fun at all in the end with empty muscles and cardiac drift. These trainings should be used as salt in soup, just a little is good, but too much spoils everything.
edit: training load was exactly 200 TSS. It’s not easy to do after a day at work in the dark, but possible with right mindset.
After almost 3 weeks of sickness and “life” making workouts sparse and low intensity its time to get back on the horse. I modified my plan to redo the final 3 weeks of SSB2 to see if I could regain my FTP, and first out was Mills. Started at 90%, and slowly crept to 95%. Legs and HR did not correlate as they should but that was to be expected. Finished with 95% in the final intervals. Next is Darwin. I will probably start with 90% again. anyway, Im back training ![]()
This is really Carpathian Peak with an extended cooldown in disguise, because I’m too lazy to hit the ‘increase intensity’ button 100 times. The rounding error on Android continues to drop my watts far enough off the target that the numbers don’t line up at the end which drives me absolutely batty but IT’S FINE.
First week of SSBLV1 on my long term plan. Depending on weather, I work outdoors so very weather dependent at this time of year, I move workouts around to fit in with that.
I’m doing the LSCT warmup before the first workout of each week to give me another metric to track - https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/bobw/rides/93125500-lsct-warmup
Goddard - https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/bobw/rides/93133860-goddard
Monitor - https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/bobw/rides/93307515-monitor
Antelope - https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/bobw/rides/93393400-antelope
All pretty steady. It just so happens that I’m repeating these during the same week as when I started back on TR last year so it’s interesting to see how I’ve progressed. Today I did the intervals in Antelope at a Wattage that I would have been in my VO2max intervals a year ago, even the easier ones were done at a level that I wouldn’t hit during the overs in Palisade for example.
My 2021 Training Plan has officially begun. Ramp test on Tuesday has me at 215 watts, which starts me 10 watts higher than the start of base last year. I think that I might actually be closer to 220 watts given my power numbers so far in workouts, but I’m going to stay the course and trust the system.
First up
Goddard --4. Decent workout. I forgot how much of a kick those form sprints bring to the system. It wasn’t harsh by any means, but definitely resulted in some harder efforts than I was expecting. Overall this went well and I worked very intentionally on holding higher cadences than I am used to, specifically 110 rpm.
Then this morning
Mount Field. I’ve always enjoyed the workout. My power target for these was 173-193, but I averaged 193 for the first one, 198 for the second and 196 for the final one. This is the workout that made me think that perhaps my FTP is slightly higher than the ramp test on Tuesday would suggest. That said, I’m going to hold strong for now, particularly because I’ve started incorporating some strength conditioning circuits for SSB.
Reinstein and Glassy fill out the rest of my week, and with some decent temperatures expected, I’m hoping to do them both outside!
