I went outside for a change! My Cleva fan has just arrived, so maybe I’ll be back inside next time!
I felt good after a few decent nights of sleep. I was going to try make this around an hour of threshold, but outdoor conditions are never conducive to staying on target. Because of the power spikes experienced in real world terrain and running out of water, it was more a Z3/4 ride in the end.
The Garmin called it 23.6mph average over 27 miles @ 328w - (it’s flat round here) but pretty pleased with that.
Thanks @FatherDamo2 I was aiming for 300 watts for this year (239 when I started this training block at the end of March). This improvement is only on Base1/2, so I’m hopeful that the Build phase will give me more practice at the higher above FTP% needed to become more familiar with working at higher pain levels, which I think is needed for the Ramp Test.
It’s amazing what a bit of mental fortitude can do! I agree, the live test helps appreciate that this is going to be painful
Perhaps not as pretty as Chad would have liked, but I’m just relieved to have completed the intervals above 100%. HR was 170+ during intervals, cadence was below 100 but i was still on the limit.
Nice and easy today. Legs felt like cinder blocks but lightened as the time passed. That 70% sure didn’t feel like 70%. Debating whether to move the ramp test to Thursday and just do Pettit again, or Townsend, tomorrow. Glad I got some easy work in today.
Started TR at the beginning of May, enjoying it so far, doing the MVSSB right now. Hope it’s ok if put in a few workouts from the past few days
Saturday was Clark outside, which is towards the beginning here, bit of a gap between 2 and 3 because I was riding through an urban area. Kept riding after that.
Sunday was supposed to be Geiger (I think), but Sunday is typically my long ride day, where I’ll either do a steady Z2 ride, or mix it up a bit for fun.
Yesterday’s scheduled workout was Bluebell, which I switched to Bluebell+1. Made a quick stop after the first set to help someone adjust their derailleur (hard to ride past someone who has their bike upside down), and another pause after the third set to decide whether to do the last set on the hill again or on the flats going back home to save time. Bumped up the “off” Watts in the second and third sets to keep HR up.
i wasn’t expecting the “recovery” bits to feel that hard.
Working on smoothing my cadence and power during the threshold intervals, and also raising my cadence to put more emphasis on my engine, which seems to be my limiting factor at the moment.
I knew that this was going to be a challenge both physically and mentally but, WOW, this was a solid slap.
My Lasko was on full power this morning but nothing short of a gale was going to cool my garage down. Then my trainer spiked, twice. Once just before the first interval and then during the final interval. I never recovered from that spike.
Rest week after build Day 4. Outdoors is underrated. It may not be as efficient for training, but when was the last time you “stole” an extra hour on the trainer?
Couldn’t agree with you more @matteo! I swap one of my scheduled rides for an outdoor mountain bike session every week and just try to hit a similar TSS. The focus when I’m outside is fun rather than work. It’s amazing how many times you can get back up that hill to session a new found off-piste run in the woods! It’s only home time when food and water run out
Ramp test - new(ish) trainer (warranty replacement, refurbished unit), and not-so-new, not-so-refurbished, largely out of warranty rider. Matched my previous FTP within a Watt. Hadn’t done a ramp test in a long while.
Using that weirdest of all weird sound tracks as well (Bach violin Partita #2 - yeah, I know). Jaakko Kuusisto, for the 0.001% who may care.
