What workout did you do today? (2020, part 1)

Found this tough today, still feeling the effects of Warlow yesterday. However, it’s done. Onwards.

My type of fun. Hard but doable. Bluebell in SSBLV1

Yer killing me Coach!

I thought this was my sort of workout after doing well with Williamson last week, but after 3 x 50s I started falling apart. I almost quit about 4 times in the first set, but thought “just get through the set, then we’ll do Baxter”, and went from there. I paused to do a 30s backpedal in the middle of all 3 sets to try and maintain some quality. When I weighed myself this morning I’d dropped 1.5kg from where I thought I was (not intentionally), so that could explain why top end stuff has been hard lately.

Not really a workout as such but not an outside ride either so I decided to post this here.

As we’re not allowed to ride our bikes outside anymore here in France, apart from a loop around the block for an hour I decided this is the best time to try a vEveresting on “that other indoor training platform” (I follow the TR plans for structured training and it definitely worked well for me over the last year or so).

I figured Alpe du Zwift was the best way to go and set out at 8-ish in the morning after sorting out my snacks (too much sweet crap).

The first four ascents were pretty easy but after that it started to get hard quickly. The last half climb was pure torture, I wanted to finish at Dutch Corner (7) but as soon as I reached the needed altitude I couldn’t be arsed climbing any more.

It’s a great challenge and definitely one of the hardest things I’ve done on a bike. I maybe shouldn’t have done it in my garage as the surroundings were quite depressing.

For those of you stuck to the trainer and looking for a good way to torture yourself / prepare yourself for some good climbing after the apocalypse I highly recommend giving it a try

Here’s the Strava proof

Nice one, kudos to you, did a triple ascent of ADZ last November and that was painful enough, that took 5 hours, I’m heavy!!.. maybe one day I’ll venture to a 50% vEverest and beyond!

Evidence of a Failed Workout on my home office window:

Yes, that is the outline of bird wings and body. Hard to see in the pic, but I can easily see the finger-like winglets at the end of each wing. The bird lived. It was pretty loud.

Yesterday at lunch we saw a hawk swoop down out of the redwood trees at the back of pic, and attack a squirrel.

did a sufferfest workout today with a bunch of interval ladders, where the rest expands (from 5s to 60s) as the intervals get harder and shorter (from 60s at 20w above FTP down to 5s as hard as you can go), then back down again, then a short break, then reversed.

The 20w to 40w above FTP portions felt super easy despite there being no rest, whereas the shorter, harder portions felt VERY hard, despite repeat hard efforts generally being a strong suit of mine.

I suspect this means i’m in better shape (time to retest FTP), but maybe tired (time for a rest week).

Bashful+1. This got ugly early on, compounded with a late start and having to bail early to start my work day. I can’t handle the 60/30 interval/recovery ratio at this intensity. Had no problem with Bashful last week 60/60. Taking a recovery next week, then I will find out if the 90/60 ratio goes any better on Bashful+2. Oh well, it’s all good. Doing this stuff for fun, so I’ll remember this one and see if I can try it again someday and do any better.

Bashful+1 is hard, quite a bit harder than the +2 version. It’s one of the few workouts I’ve failed on. I got to the fourth interval in the last set and there was nothing there, managed the next one, skipped the sixth and did the last. If I’d done the fourth then there’s no way I could have done the next three.

The short recoveries are brutal, especially when you’re older, the minute in the +2 version suited me much better.

We had a very healthy looking coyote saunter across the back yard this morning. In 15 years have only seen 3 or 4 of those critters.

Added an endurance ride as I needed to get a workout in. Also did a 20 min tread run with Olivia on the peloton digital app.

Ramp test followed by Carter.

Given the current situation and with pretty much all events cancelled, I’m resetting back to SSBLV1&II + 2x/week of weights and core. Weekends are going to be interesting since the weather here is turning nice but I don’t want to be outside with all the other people. I may be spending a lot of time down at the Trinity River levees. The paved walkways are way, way too crowded right now, but maybe the recent “stay at home” order from the county will change that. You’re only supposed to go outside to exercise once/day. I took the dog for a walk this morning, so that’s my one time for today.

Without getting into details: As a result of covid, I basically don’t have a physical place where I can easily do workouts right now. I think I’ll set my trainer up outdoors, but I don’t have access to a mains plug. Any cooling suggestions? It’s not very hot out (40-50f,) but I’m still just soaking wet with sweat due to lack of airflow. Help? :frowning:

USB fan on a battery maybe? That’s not much airflow, but at least something.
