Based on my limited knowledge of actually making it into ‘the’ break, this is what the efforts felt like. Take your turn then pop off, try to recover, then go again. Of course you’re not recovering at such a low wattage level but the mental aspect was there.
Zwift: Vikings Valhalla Recovery Ride
Just what the legs ordered recovery rides in groups do stop you doing too much and having that little effort at some point! Enjoyed the banter of the collective, will look out for this one again, hopefully a regular Wednesday 17:20 (BST) spot.
Kern-4 at the start of my taper. What is it that I get through these reasonably well but struggle as soon intensity goes beyond 110%? The threshold intervals were fine, the sweet spot “valley” was almost easy, but the outer 115% intervals were very tough. What is my limited here, vo2max or the underlying aerobic engine?
Ritter. Had not done over/under in a while, was tough but did it. Ready to start my VO2Max mini-plan next week, and crush 3-min repeats in a short while…
Solo 125km around Singapore in the midday heat with some nasty headwinds for company. Average temperature was 36°C. Usually we do these rides early and in a group, which is the formula I’ll stick to in future.
Needless to say, I started suffering big time around the 80km mark. In spite of taking around 6l of fluid on board during the ride, I still ended up weighing 3kg less than when I started
During first 30 second VO2 max interval thought this isn’t hit my VO2 max levels and raised intensity by 10%. Last interval on final set I raised by 15%… only on reading ride info I found out it was for leg drills, in particular single side leg drills!
Wait, the VO2 intervals aren’t for single leg, just the before and after intervals. Goddard is form first but not a very interesting workout for me IMO
Okay, thanks for feedback, thought it was why the intervals felt comfortable. Yes it wasn’t the most exciting workout but enjoyed doing it around the Volcano.
Have been adding a lot more rest into my structure, reduced current plan from a medium volume to a low volume, mainly so | could include Zwift academy work. Haven’t yet started the TR plan as I’ve been pushing them back by the week, thus ended up doing less TSS per week. Body seems to be responding well to this reduction… another lesson to be learnt.
Day off today light spin on Saturday with a planned hike/walk on Sunday and back on it Monday.
Been listening to the video podcasts while training for some different forms of entertainment. Will stick to the music for VO2 sessions but they’re a good listen, starting from episode 1. Started adding a longer cooldown to workouts now, at least another 10 mins to get my heart rate as low as possible before getting off which seems to be around 100-105.
Monitor today with an increase in intensity by 1% per interval. Started to feel a bit threshold-y by the 4th interval
TT scene is quiet in Aus. Had to rethink my priorities when it came to riding and I just want to have fun with other like minded folk while tickling my competitive nature so with crits being quite big down under I’m going to focus on short power build. Sweet spot and threshold work I think are my strengths but VO2 work is definitely my crux so this was somewhat of a milestone for me.
Looks like it and it kinda was. Saw the IF only at 0.85 so thought that’d be a good start to VO2 work. Felt like I could’ve upped it by 3-5% in the first set then remembered I had another 60+ intervals to complete and needed to pace myself. Glad I didn’t!
Tunemah…first real plan that I am trying to stick to other than previous zwift academy plans. I managed to hit the first 12 min with 100% but on the second had to throttle back to 95% to ensure I could give it a good shot at finishing. Over unders are pretty brutal and was expecting 2 mins under and 1 over but it was 2/2 for 12 mins…ouch. Glad I finished it.
