What plan should I use after racing season?

Now that racing (Olympic distance) is over and swimming masters season is begginning, what plan should I use? I wish to keep my triathlon fitness and be ready to crank things up next summer.

Kudos on finishing the season!

If it’s been a while, we’d recommend taking 1-2 weeks off to rest and recover first. Training demands a lot of our body and mind, and it can really deplete us by the end of a long season. Some time off can help us come back to training refreshed and motivated.

If you’ve already taken an end-of-season break, now is probably a good time to get back into some base-style training to work on your aerobic engine. Improving your base over the fall/winter will give you a solid foundation to build off of next spring/summer as you get closer to your goal race(s) next year.

Plan Builder can also help you lay out your training for next season.

Off-season is is used to work on a weakness or for a complete change of activity.

Have a look at you 100m swim time, 40k TT and 10k pace to figure out your strengths and weaknesses, but also look at you recovery, nutrition and consistency to see what you could work on over the winter.

How do I tell plan builder that it’s time for base style training? All it gives me for the foreseeable time is build/spec.

SkyNet/PlanBuilder knows you still have more to give this season, stop slacking!

If not mentally tired, is there a point in doing a few intensity sessions during the “break” to at least retain some fitness and not starting from a lower level into the new season?

Some studies say yes.

There is nothing wrong with maintaining fitness to some degree if you’re sensible about it.
