Anybody have a good suggestion on how to schedule running races into a TR plan?
For the most part, I can add running workouts manually on non-cycling days, and that works fine. I’m not training for running right now, just doing weekly long steady runs and the occasional tempo or speed workout. Not looking to PR a 5k or 10k this season.
But, I will be running some 5 mile trail races or local 5ks in the spring/summer. I’d love to be able to have TR recognize those as B or C races and plan around them accordingly. For example, right now TR has a 4 hour ride on a Saturday when I have a running race on Sunday. I don’t need a full taper like an A race, but it would be neat to have that Sat ride automatically adjusted back to something more reasonable (maybe 2 hours easy).
Would love to get another perspective on this as well!
But what I do, is leave myself enough space for running training (and races) by only doing 2 hard bike sessions a week (Masters plan). I can then run 3-4 times a week, incl 1x intervals and 1x long run, rest of the week’s runs are easy - and I’ve learnt the value of true easy runs!
Then this Sat, I am running a race. So I had space to swap last Sunday’s easy ride with Thursday’s threshold. So I did 3 hard workouts last week, but as per normal, but running training has obviously started to decrease. Therefore this week no threshold 2 weeks before race. Just 1 hard session yesterday, and that’s it. Rest is endurance - and one wake-up run today. And tbh, after the run this morning I even skipped tonight’s 1h endurance ride.
Raceday itself is marked as run at race pace and non training day. And Sunday bit of endurance, which I’ll change to an easy outdoor ride.
EDIT: In hindsight I remembered that I marked the run race days as days off to not get training scheduled there from my training plan, then added the run as a race pace run afterwards, and then removed the day off flag.
Part of the problem though, is that TR (IMO) does not quite take into account the overall impact of running, but that is another problem.
Masters medium volume cycling plan, so two hard bike workouts (T/Th), short endurance on W, long endurance on Sat. And a “long” run on Sunday. Sometimes I swap the W ride for a run.
I tried entering a run on a Sunday with the effort set to Race or All Out, but TR still seems to schedule long endurance rides on Sat (which it wouldn’t do with a bike race on Sunday).
Not a big deal - easy enough to just ride less on Sat (and I’m not looking for a taper - all my runs this year will be ‘B’ or ‘C’ race equivalents), was just asking in case I was missing a setting.
I follow the tri plans, omitting all swim workouts. I’m a triathlete turned duathlete, but this would likely work as well. When setting up the events in the plan, I simply set the distance for the swim to 1 yard (it won’t let me do zero). You can likely schedule your running races as triathlons, then set 0s for the swim and bike portions. Also, the tri plan is pretty good at balancing running and cycling with respect to recovery.
