I am 3 days into this software and I think it’s fantastic.
I run so as a runner I wish it could do a just run or a run/bike program.
For example. Im doing a half marathon in the fall and I want to keep cycling… I’d love if this software could create a half marathon training program with X days of the week used for cycling as well.
I’m doing Unbound Gravel (100 mile distance) but am also training for an ultramarathon later in the summer. I did the full distance (“Ironman”) triathlon training plan. No swimming for me so I will just ignore those workouts.
Personally, using the triathlon programs doesn’t work for me. This is because I’m looking for the ability to do runs and rides, but not to regularly have days with both activities prescribed on one day. So, what I do is either have TR prescribe a cycling plan with the number of days I want to workout and then replace some of those days with runs (example if TR prescribes an easier ride but I want to run, I replace the easy ride with an easy run), or, I have TR give me a low volume plan and then add in runs. You just have to be really careful to not overdo it with this method. Listen to your body.
I was looking at the different triathlon plans. They put a lot of swimming into the program. The Brick day function is kind of annoying if you’re not actually training for a multi sport event.
Your idea of low volume and add runs is what I’m thinking of doing. Bike three times a week. Run three times a week. Done. Do a whole day running. Have one day where you run easy for an hour and a half. And the third day is just whatever your body needs.
N=1 I’m doing a masters TR cycling plan, and then adding in 2 or 3 days of running. I running totally on feel, building distance, rather than following a running plan. That’s got me through trail races up to 30km.
I’m more a completer for running being honest with myself, and haven’t had the niggles with this approach when I was doing run intervals on top of cycling intervals!
I replace easy days. Well, actually I’ve just built the plan now with 3 days cycling, so 2 of intensity and then I fit in runs the other days. Only “issue” I have is that run commute is a bit logistically harder than a cycle commute, carrying work device/ stuff - but has the advantage of being a single rather than double day. Also one of my madder events was a self navigated mountain ultra*, with minimum kit requirements, so getting used to a pack was no harm.
*didn’t list that above, as didn’t go well, but I don’t feel that was “the plan”, more I spent too much time doing recce’s for the navigation, and not enough on actually running for the road parts.
Similar to mine. Subject to change with work and family but…
M - Off
T - Hard (indoors)
W - Run commute
Th - Hard (indoors)
Fri - Run commute
Sat - Outside spin (if it ever stops f*ckin raining here on the east coast of Ireland!)
Sun - Trail run
Up until race season anyway, and then I’ll drop a run. My priority is always the 2 hard workouts though, as ultimately bike is my priority. But I’m enjoying mixing it up the last 7 or 8 months with more running.
