Trainerroad crashing on iphone

I have used TR for a few years on my phone (iOS) with no real issues. Over the past few weeks, however, I’ve started to have problems with the app crashing when I use another app while riding.

I usually watch a film or two while riding (on my laptop, which is on a stand in front of my bike) and when I’ve watched it, there’s usually some 15-20min of time until I have completed the workout. That’s when I usually start to read the news, browse reddit etc. on my phone. In the past this has been no problem: I switch to Chrome or some other app, and TR continues working despite my using another app. But lately, when I switch to a web browser, browse for a few minutes and then come back to TR, the app has crashed and the workout has stopped, and the minutes I have spent on the browser have not been recorded. I then have to manually resume the workout to be able to finish it.

Is this a TR bug or some new stupid iOS feature? Would somebody know a remedy for this? My phone is on iOS 18.1.1 (iPhone 13).

Hey!

Gosh, training interuptions are always frustrating . Let’s see if we can get it resolved.

I believe that iOS 18.1.1 was released in late November 2024, primarily as a maintenance update to address bugs and performance issues.

When did you first start experiencing this issue?

My Suggestions:

  1. Update the TrainerRoad App: Ensure you’re running the latest version of the TrainerRoad app.
  2. Restart Your Phone: A simple restart can clear memory and resolve temporary resource issues.
  3. Disable Background App Refresh for Other Apps:
  • Go to SettingsGeneralBackground App Refresh, and turn it off for apps you don’t need active while using TrainerRoad. This can free up resources.
  1. Switch Apps Efficiently:
  • Instead of fully exiting TrainerRoad, try swiping up and pausing in the App Switcher to keep TrainerRoad running in the background.
  1. Check iOS Settings:
  • Ensure Low Power Mode isn’t enabled, as it can throttle app performance.
  • Verify TrainerRoad is allowed to run in the background: SettingsTrainerRoad → Toggle Background App Refresh ON.
  1. Reinstall TrainerRoad: If issues persist, uninstalling and reinstalling TrainerRoad can sometimes resolve app-specific bugs.

Additional Considerations:

  • As a temporary workaround, using a second device for browsing to minimize disruption could reduce frustration

Give those steps a shot and let me know how you get on during your next ride! If you have any questions, please just shoot them this way

Apple just recently released iOS 18.2.1 containing bug fixes. I wonder if it helps with your issue.

I run TR on my iPhone. Sometimes I will need to answer a text and the workout will pause but I just hit resume once I am done. But as for a solution… maybe just have the phone (maybe an older phone?) dedicated for TR and just let it be? Do you have another device to browse the web then on the trainer?

TR crashes in my iPhone after opening the calendar. I updated IOS version, reinstalled TR and keeps crashing

Many people are having issues with Zwift and their Companion app, where the Companion won’t latch on to the Zwift app. The last updates to macOS and ipadOS seem to have introduced a number of bugs, or ‘unannounced features’ that are interfering with things working normally. The bug with Companion seems to be a security issue with access to the Local Network. But hearing of crashes while Companion is running aren’t unusual too. Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the app? Also try rebooting the iPhone. It’s gotten ingrained to not reboot often, but sometimes that actually works. Sometimes… It’s also possible that it could be a multitasking issue, resource exhaustion. I know that YouTube is a HUGE resource hog.

Tried rebooting, closing all apps, reinstalling, updating IOS version…the TR app crashes only when l open the calendar

I opened TR, started a ride, then opened Calendar, and swapped back to TR, and it was running. I swapped back and forth between them, no issues.

How do you get it to crash? I opened calendar, opened TR and started a ride and swapped back and forth too. What iPhone do you have? Weird… Me, 15 pro max, 512.

My crash happened just by opening the calendar. No need to start a workout. I contacted yesterday with support and they told me they made some changes in the backend that have solved the issue for the moment. No crashes since then.

Kudos to TR support !!
To me it’s the best TR value compared to other platforms

I had the trainerroad app crash mid workout today. Sometimes I lock the phone to stop myself from staring at how long there is left in the interval. I did that today and lost almost 15 minutes of a sweet spot interval! Luckily I was dual recording on my watch so had a backup of the data  I am running an iPhone SE 2020 on 17.7.2.

I’ve recently had TR crash twice while running Netflix and TR simultaneously on my iPhone.

Ah so glad to hear it!

I’ll pass your feedback on :heart_hands:.

Netflix can take up a lot of memory, causing TrainerRoad to crash or freeze. To prevent this, we reccomend closing any app running in the background :+1:.

Just chiming in that updating iOS seemed to help for my original problem, but I’ve had it reappear a few times. The crashes seem to happen mostly on longer workouts (3h+). No idea what the cause is here, but perhaps what @SarahLaverty said about other apps taking up a lot of memory might have something to do with it  Next time I will try closing all apps other than TR and my web browser and see what happens.

In Zwift Forums, there were a few (lot?) of users experiencing crashes and other issues with the Zwift and Companion apps and the now previous versions of ipadOS, iOS, and macOS. Some of the issues (like what I experienced) were apparently security/privacy issues, but others were reporting outright crashes of either or both apps, some relatively unable to reliably run either/both app. Early communication with an engineer at Zwift last night indicates that the issues have largely, potentially completely been resolved. They were amazed that the security/privacy issue lasted as long as it did, but Apple did eventually address it apparently.

Update any/all Apple devices as soon as possible. Reboot after update, and hope for the best.
