TrainerRoad AI FTP

Hi all, struggling with the TR AI FTP as it doesn’t seem to work for me. I hear it is very smart etc. and when following a plan I kept on getting bumps from 230 to 262 over a period of 4 months. However when I decided to deviate from the plan and throw in a 3 x 10@90% sweetspot workout I could not finish it. I tried it 3 times and failed each one. It was only when I Moved my FTP down to 240 that I could finish the workout. My presumption is that TR has been lying to me to keep me motivated and artificially inflating my ftp based on efforts above threshold. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Were the FTP changes from you checking your auto FTP or TR prompting you?

I checked mine too often, I feel, so ended up with lower PL workouts fairly consistently. This means I am fairly often doing shorter intervals which skew me towards anaerobic efforts, which often puts your FTP a bit higher for me.

I’m currently planning on not updating my FTP until I’m happy doing longer VO2 and threshold sessions. Until then I’ll just live with z2 not stressing me at all for my available time.

I find checking that your threshold PL levels are in the 4-6 range is another good way of validating AI FTP.

Hey @Will985

I took a look at your Calendar and man, you’ve been training!

Have you ever considered that this may not be an issue with your FTP but rather fatigue?

Based on your training history, there has been little to no recovery since the beginning of the year, plus there doesn’t seem to be a structure to your training. Your last attempt at the imported workouts you have on SS90/30 3X10, you rated it “Maximum Effort / Cut short due to Training Fatigue”.

Moving forward, I would recommend taking some recovery until you feel fresh again and then resume your training and incorporate Recovery Weeks, as it seems you have SS90/30 3X10 on ends. Or maybe get on a TR plan and see how it goes?

Our plans incorporate Supercompensation, which is a physiological process in endurance training where the body responds to training stress by getting stronger after recovery. After a tough workout, your performance drops a bit because you’re tired. But when you rest and recover, your body not only returns to normal but it gets stronger than before to handle the stress better next time. This is key to completing workouts like 3x10 @90%.
