TrainerRoad AI FTP Prediction FAQs

I know you are asking to not see the red and yellow, but I think the answer is above.

How does AI FTP work with recovery intervals when picking workouts? I can handle high levels of time in zone, and even longer intervals, but I require long recovery between intervals. I’m 40.

Will the AI recognise my need for more recovery interval time? Or is short recovery time just something I should suffer through until I get better at it?

If you are being forced into shorter recoveries and that is decaying the quality of the work, you will get a message on screen suggesting a longer workout to open up the library. You then have the choice to pick which you prefer.

I plan on trusting the system and rolling with it, but I’m a little bit confused about ftp reduction. I was at ftp 220 on the old TR. Now it dropped me down to 215, which is fine, but it has me predicted at 206 in 27days.

I am in the specialty phase of a “getting faster on group rides” masters plan with a balanced approach . I nail every workout, with RPE never higher than a 4. I never have to take a break, backpedal or coast, my heart rate drops back down quickly after hard intervals, and I never miss or substitute a workout. Why such a big drop?

I think FTP drops in the specialty phase are to be expected. Usually it’s building you up for your event and you are trying to shed fatigue so you can perform. Your case may be a little different since it’s more of a general plan.

I’d reccomend posting your calendar anytime you have a question like this as users can help you. Could be the wrong plan focus(balanced, conservative, aggressive, etc) or something else.

If you are doing a group ride that may not quite be factoring in as there was a bug with that at the end of the beta.

That was the case before when it matched the ramp test. The ramp test ftp != 60 minute max power. Nate has mentioned that they will be giving estimated 20 min and 60 min power in the future. They have the ability to run it now.

Is this going to take away the surprise of a newly detected FTP that we get every 28 days? Or could there be a bit of under reporting so we can have a surprise each month and ultimately keep us coming back for more?

My understanding is that it takes away the surprise. There is a wider margin of error 28 days out and then it gets “tighter” or “more accurate” as you get closer to the date. So by the time you are a day or two away, that’s pretty much going to be the new AIFTP training metric.

Are you on balanced, demanding or aggressive? And are you adding in extra rides. Early beta user here, and most people who saw a decline in projected AIFTP were on demanding or aggressive or added a bunch of extra work. The model is predicting you will be over trained. Posting your calendar and setting helps others help you.

Also, in speciality phase you typically don’t get a boost in FTP. It is more about refining your fitness for your goal.

Can I turn this off? I notice, when I change a workout, it changes upcoming workouts that I have already customized for myself.

Thanks.

I’m on a balanced plan, no additional workouts, races or group rides. Strictly sticking to the plan.

I feel like what I was being fed was very accurate. There were times I’d start a workout and think “there’s no way I can finish” and then I could, to my surprise.

Like I said I still plan on trusting the system, I am just curious if these changes sounded correct.

I’ve only been on TR about a year. I’ve committed to trusting the TR system a period of time so I could see what results I get.
With the new changes, I’m trying to decipher the what these new numbers mean

Thank you.

I’ve recently gone through some health challenges so my workout levels and FTP have decreased. Im back to rebuilding now and my SS level is a 3.0, but my AI workout recommendation is giving me SS 5.5 workouts. Based on my latest SS workout (1.0 @ moderate), even a 3.0 will be hard but I get that the system doesn’t understand my health, just my training history. But why is is still recommending workouts 2.5 levels higher than my current SS level anyway? Even common sense would suggest that based on my recent training history an increase like that is a recipe for failure, any thoughts?

I too have always trusted the system

BUT now being told my FTP prediction my FTP will go down I am questioning why I would want to trust a workout program/plan that leads to lower FTP

Thank you

How do you do that on the TR app please?

Can someone comment on what would be the difference in the impact on the AI plan/detection in the following two scenarios?

  • selecting a harder alternate workout
  • Using the workout prescribed, but increasing the intensity through the app during workout

I think a lot of the chagrin would be gone if we had ai detected and predicted 20 and 60 minute power.

Click calendar. On the top of the screen you should see your ftp, weight, w/kg, and a word like “custom” or “balanced”. Click that. Click view current approach. Click edit.

You’re moving the goalposts.

Also, as a senior software engineer, I would think you’d say “having the ability to view and edit your current plan always visible on the top of the calendar” is pretty intuitive.

I’m in exactly the same boat.

In the middle of a plan, using a platform I thought was giving me accurate FTP estimates, unable to find the correct parameters to continue my plan and actually achieve an FTP increase. If I wanted to decrease my FTP or have it steady, I would not need TrainerRoad as a product.

This update forced me already to spend significantly more time reading about TrainerRoad internals than I ever intended to, yet I’m no closer to getting/continuing a training plan that just yesterday was going to make me faster.

It is immensely frustrating how this was rolled out, and I would personally love to stick to the old system and gradually adopt AI features at my own pace.
