TrainerRoad AI FTP Prediction FAQs

Hello. Sorry if I missed the answer in your explanation above, but here is what happened to my calendar with the change to AI.

My FTP went from 210 to 196 and my workout tomorrow (Thursday) went from the normal 1.5 hours to 45 minutes. This is coming off of a rest week last week. I have been completing all workouts as well.
Could TR take a look please?

@Nate_Pearson

I wouldn’t even worry about it more than once a month. That might even be too much.

Or maybe if you consistently keep beating the AI, but still not more than once a month.

I wanted to choose my own workout instead of what AI suggested. When I selected the workout I wanted and put it in the calendar, the program (AI?) changed it on me. Frustrating.

When you are adding it pin it

That won’t happen unless you choose an AI workout. If you choose a regular workout, it will stay.

If you choose an AI workout and like the one it picks, right click and select pin. Then it wont change.

Thanks! I had created a bunch of custom workouts using the workout creator. I can’t seem to find them. Have they disappeared or am I looking in the wrong place?

This page: Log In to TrainerRoad

Then go down on the left and click custom.

When you go to the workouts page there are tabs for different views in the upper right corner.

Thanks!

Thank you for responding, Nate. My situation is the opposite actually. The detection has me quite a bit higher than my set FTP. I like the prediction feature, allowing me to make changes and see the potential effects. But I also like using my own plans and workouts, not necessarily a TR plan. Is there no wiggle room to allow this feature still? I found it quite useful. But I understand your previous response.

You can totally use your own plans. You just have to use the FTP from AI FTP detection. Then you can put any workout you want on the calendar, including custom workouts.

I’m curious, does FTP prediction stay off during Specialty Phase? I can see it being a distraction, if not it’t easy enough to turn off.

I am very excited about the new release. And I was even more excited when it bumped my FTP from 279 to 288. But then later when I looked at the FTP prediction, I was disappointed to see that after 4 more hard weeks of training, my FTP was predicted to be unchanged. I played with changing my plan around for over two hours and the best I could come up with was a 1W increase. I don’t even remember exactly how I did it. Most attempts to change the plan actually resulted in a lower predicted FTP including lowering days or reducing aggressiveness.

I am currently on a Demanding high volume plan (11 hours per week). I have modified the default schedule so that my endurance ride is on Mondays instead of Sundays (I often have a full day conflict on weekends) and set it to a 3 hour fixed TrainerRoad workout rather than a solo ride.

I was trying to be super diligent this month about following the plan exactly after listening to the podcast finally made me understand better why it is important to respect recovery days and weeks. I was hoping it would have been a good n=1 experiment for myself to see if my FTP climbed more this month. With the recalibration, I won’t know now since I don’t know how much of this change is me vs. the model change. Oh well.

Could someone look into this for me? I wouldn’t think I have reached my full potential. I have been on TR for a bit over 2 years and biking for just over 3 years.

I’ll let the TR team give a more detailed answer. But also remember progression isn’t linear. The expectation of gaining Watts every 4 weeks isn’t realistic over a multiple years. Once you get past the easy gains of a newly trained cyclist, a 5% gain in a season is really good. So let’s assume you have an FTP of 280. That puts a 5% gain at 14 watts. Over a 7 month season, that’s 2 watts a month. Your power meter has more variation than that. So I wouldn’t get overly pessimistic on a few watts being gained over 4 weeks. To me, the biggest benefit of AIFTP Detection is to prevent users from overtraining (if I do more hours and more intensity I have to get faster, right). The “danger” of It is users getting too focused on the short term. Kind of like investing….focus on long term gains!

It looks like you’ve disabled automatic Fatigue Detection (fka RLGL) adjustments. That means all of the workouts on your calendar will not automatically swap to endurance workouts or rest days; it is effectively turned off. You’ll still see red and yellow days show up on your calendar in the AI Simulation Window but they’re not changing the workouts being prescribed.

Looking at your account, it does seem like there might be a bug where your Athlete Levels haven’t properly updated to match your recently completed workouts. That said, TrainerRoad AI isn’t using levels to pick workouts. It’s all based on wattage.

You haven’t accepted your new AI FTP, which would increase your FTP and let TR AI choose workouts appropriate to the watts you’ve proved that you can do. It will also let you use AI FTP Prediction like Nate mentioned earlier

I really hope you give all the new features a try, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

I’m excited to try the new feature but the predicted FTP I’m getting for the next 4 weeks of training seems a bit off. its showing that I will go from my new detected ftp of 347 to 365 and I know there is no way that is happening, lol. Anyhow I excited to see how the training is going to change since i feel like i have plateaued a bit. hopefully it the predictions adjust after i complete more of the workouts.

i am so excited to try this out-been with TR for 10 years now and i trust everything you do! however i was a little alarmed that my ftp went from 306-322w ! i mean i am happy but nervous. will commit fully to trying some workouts and report back!

In the midst of FTP increase plan, so the new ftp detection dropped my FTP by 2x+, and then said the training plan will increase my FTP by the same 2x+ in the next month.:sob:

This is confusing.

Dang, was already in a tough spot confidence wise recovering from a collarbone break and being restricted to minimal time on the trainer the past month, and this update took my FTP from 315 (already down from 328 last week) down to 291. Feels bad. Maybe that’s realistic and will set me on an more efficient path for a comeback.

Not Hating, I appreciate the effort TR has put into this.

I just want to turn off the feature, but don’t see the option in my account settings. I turned off FTP prediction but still getting the fatigue detection in my calendar.

I tested the new system a bit for few days before the release. I got convinced that AI will pick the best workout for me, got used to the new “FTP/not exactly ftp thing” and i like it. All i care is balanced progressive overload and TR is delivering that. I am not attached to my FTP as i know whats my fitness based on my feel on the bike /simple as that/. As it is mention many times on the thread look at the actual workout that TRAI is prescribing. TR prescribed me few workouts and never i have thought that they feel off. Also i really enjoy the new " TrainerRoad AI workout”, i just tell the system that i want to do tempo workout and it prescribes the best workout. I can now do custom tempo block without manually adjust workouts.
