I am a long time TR user that has previously seen impressive gains, which are unfortunately maybe a thing of the past due to a new baby and limited training time outside of work.
I have just tried accepting my new FTP (a 10% drop no less), but what that means is that I am no longer offered 45 minute sweet spot workouts because I top out, so it defaults to an hour which I do not have in a morning without an even earlier rise. To continue to get meaningful 45 minute sweet spot work, I have reverted to my previous FTP, losing the benefits this update is supposed to offer. Also in reverting back I have lost my previous progression levels.
I also tried to create a new plan based on the predicted FTP and the time I have to train, and it populated it with durations that were greater than I requested and have available.
Both issues are a frustrating step backwards as far as I am concerned, and makes me wonder how this update can help time pressed individuals. Does it mean I can’t improve with the time I have? Am I the only one? Is this is now the best platform for me?
This sounds frustrating. Let’s see if we can unpack it a bit and give some guidance for your situation:
The reason you were prescribed longer workouts is due to an inherent limitation with Sweet Spot workouts in the 45 minute time frame. You can only get so much Sweet Spot workout done in 45min with a warm up and a cool down. What TrainerRoad AI is effectively telling you is “Hey, you could see better improvement if you increased your ride duration above 45 minutes. I’ve gone ahead and updated your 45min workout to be a 60min workout, but you can just click on the monopoly card and select the original 45min workout if you want.” I understand time constraints, so if 45min is all you have, keep on going at 45min! Just know that if you were able to bump it up, you’d see more improvement. You also don’t have to go to the old FTP. You can keep AI FTP Detection’s FTP value and just keep those workouts at 45min. It’ll do it’s best with the limits you put on it.
In terms of your Athlete Levels, no worries there. It’ll all calibrate quickly and your workouts will just feel “right”. It’s super cool
For your new plan, feel free to manually set your durations for each training day.
